A new Detroit pilot program is testing whether connected traffic signals can give fire and EMS crews a clearer path through busy intersections, potentially shaving valuable seconds off emergency response times. LAKE FOREST, Calif. — Two drivers were killed and a 7-year-old girl was taken to a hospital following a wrong-way collision on the 241 Toll Road in Orange County. The crash happened around 10:35 p.m. on Sept. 11 in the southbound lanes of the toll road, just north of Lake Forest Drive. Investigators said a Honda SUV was heading north in the southbound lanes when it collided head-on with a BMW traveling in the correct direction. A man died after being struck by three vehicles while crossing Pacific Avenue in Long Beach on Sunday evening, with two of the drivers leaving the scene, police said. The crash happened around 7:24 p.m. Sept. 13 on Pacific Avenue, just north of Pacific Coast Highway. Officers responding to the collision found the adult male pedestrian lying in the roadway. A 28-year-old Charlotte woman has been charged with intentional child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury after a 7-month-old boy in her care was hospitalized with serious head and brain injuries, according to court records and local reporting. The child’s mother told investigators that she left her son with Shidae Brown on the evening of Sept. 7. The following day, the mother spoke with Brown and the baby over FaceTime and said the infant appeared to be doing well at the time. The situation changed the next day. An 18-month-old Utah girl died after investigators found she had been left for long periods in her crib with inadequate food, water and care. Her parents have now been sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to charges stemming from her death. Mitchell Chesnut Murray and Carrie Marie Murray, both 32, were each sentenced to two consecutive prison terms of one to 15 years for child abuse homicide and aggravated child abuse. A former Kansas City police officer has been sentenced to life in prison for killing a 71-year-old man during a confrontation outside a Walmart in Kansas City, Missouri. Taquiza Johnson, 49, was sentenced Monday in Platte County for the second-degree murder of Ronald Barnett. Charles Vandoil Byrd, 50, received the sentence Tuesday after entering a no-contest plea to one count of murder in the death of his wife, 44-year-old Angela Byrd.
