A Bloomington, Indiana, father and stepmother are facing felony neglect charges after investigators alleged their 14-year-old daughter was confined to her bedroom, denied adequate access to food and water, and suffered a severe decline in health before her death.

Jerry Lavette Mayfield Jr. and Toris Michelle Mayfield are accused of neglecting Jamiyah Mayfield, who died on July 2, 2025. Arrest warrants were issued for both parents after prosecutors filed probable-cause affidavits in Monroe County on October 6, 2026.

The allegations emerged from a lengthy investigation into Jamiyah’s final months. Investigators reviewed home surveillance footage, cellphone records, school information, medical records and autopsy findings while reconstructing what happened before her death.

Jamiyah was still attending public school in January 2025, when she was recorded as weighing about 124 pounds. She was withdrawn from the Monroe County public school system the following month and began homeschooling.

Within months, her condition had changed dramatically. She weighed about 80 pounds when she died.

Concerns Were Raised After She Left School

A report was made to Indiana’s Department of Child Services in February 2025 alleging that Jamiyah was being kept inside the home and had little social contact outside school.

Investigators later learned that she had previously had regular access to school meals, school personnel and other adults outside the household. The case documents allege that her access to those resources changed after she was removed from school.

In May 2025, Jamiyah was taken to IU Health after developing swelling in her legs. Medical records cited during the investigation documented weight loss and marks on her skin.

Investigators said the parents attributed her eating problems to her own behavior, including claims that she refused food. However, detectives later found other evidence that raised questions about how much food Jamiyah was actually permitted to access.

Investigators Describe Increasing Restrictions at Home

Evidence collected during the investigation allegedly showed that Jamiyah spent increasing amounts of time inside her bedroom.

The room was monitored by a camera, and investigators said Jamiyah could communicate with her stepmother through the system. In recorded exchanges, she was heard asking for permission to use the bathroom.

Investigators also found that the bedroom door had been modified in a way that allowed it to be locked from the outside. A screw had reportedly been placed in the frame of the room’s only window, preventing it from being opened.

Surveillance footage also showed changes to the bedroom over time. Earlier recordings showed furniture, clothing and bedding inside. Later footage showed significantly fewer belongings in the room.

Investigators said other members of the household were able to move in and out of the home while Jamiyah remained restricted.

Text messages recovered from the parents’ phones also became part of the investigation. Authorities said the messages included discussions about the food Jamiyah was permitted to eat.

Her Health Deteriorated Before Her Death

The investigation found a stark difference between Jamiyah’s physical condition earlier in 2025 and the weeks leading up to her death.

Her weight dropped from approximately 124 pounds in January to 80 pounds by July.

Investigators alleged that the decline occurred during a period when she had limited access to food and medical care. A child-abuse pediatrician who reviewed the evidence concluded that the circumstances surrounding the starvation were consistent with severe abuse and described the death as “diagnostic of child torture,” according to the court documents.

That assessment is part of the evidence cited by investigators and is not itself a court finding.

On July 2, 2025, Toris Mayfield called 911 after finding Jamiyah unresponsive inside the home. Emergency personnel took the teenager to a Bloomington hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

    Autopsy Findings Were Later Changed

The initial autopsy did not identify severe malnutrition and dehydration as the final cause of death. It initially attributed the death to a medication-related heart rhythm problem involving six medications.

As investigators continued reviewing evidence, including medical and surveillance records, the autopsy findings were reconsidered.

A later amendment changed the manner of death to undetermined and listed the cause as complications of severe protein-calorie malnutrition and dehydration.

The updated medical finding became a significant part of the investigation into whether neglect contributed to Jamiyah’s death. Investigators said the evidence showed a medically unacceptable decline after she was removed from school and that inadequate nutrition and healthcare contributed to her condition.

Father and Stepmother Now Face Felony Charges

The latest court filings show that Jerry Mayfield and Toris Mayfield each face felony neglect charges connected to Jamiyah’s death. The cases include Level 1 and Level 3 felony allegations, and active arrest warrants have been issued for both.

Investigators said the Mayfields initially cooperated with the investigation but later stopped participating after detectives presented evidence pointing toward possible abuse.

The allegations remain allegations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

For Jamiyah’s family, the case has brought renewed attention to the teenager’s final months and the circumstances surrounding her death. Her grandmother, Jevona Starks, previously sought help with funeral expenses and described Jamiyah as a loving teenager who enjoyed singing and dancing.

The investigation has now moved into the criminal court process, where prosecutors will have to prove the allegations against the two defendants.
