A confrontation outside a Las Vegas food bank that began with a request for a cigarette ended in the death of a 60-year-old man. Months later, the man convicted in the case has been sentenced to prison.
Shiloh Leutu, 38, received a sentence of three to eight years in prison after pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the death of Scott Dennis. The sentence was handed down in October 2026, following the fatal July 9 encounter outside City Impact Urban Food Bank in Las Vegas.
Argument Began While Couple Waited in Line
Dennis and his girlfriend were waiting outside the food bank, located on East Sahara Avenue, before it opened. According to investigators, Dennis briefly stepped away from the line to smoke while his girlfriend remained behind.
During that time, two men approached her and asked for a cigarette. When she explained that she did not smoke, one of the men reportedly began insulting her.
Dennis noticed the confrontation and returned to stand up for his girlfriend. What followed quickly turned violent.
Investigators said one of the men struck Dennis in the face, knocking him to the ground. The second man, identified as Leutu, then joined the assault.
Surveillance Footage Helped Investigators Reconstruct the Attack
Police reviewed surveillance footage and witness accounts to establish what happened during the confrontation.
Investigators said the assault continued as Dennis struggled to get back on his feet. According to the police account, Leutu repeatedly punched Dennis in the head and abdomen, while the other man also participated in the attack.
Bystanders eventually intervened, and both suspects left the scene.
Dennis was taken to Sunrise Hospital, where he later died. His girlfriend contacted emergency services shortly before 6:20 a.m., according to the investigation.
The Clark County coroner’s records later listed heart disease as the cause of death, with a physical altercation identified as a contributing factor. The arrest report also indicated that investigators believed the assault may have triggered a heart attack.
Leutu Was Arrested Days After the Incident
Authorities identified Leutu as a suspect during their investigation and arrested him on July 15, six days after the beating.
He initially faced an open murder charge along with a charge related to battery of an older person resulting in substantial bodily harm. Prosecutors later chose not to pursue the murder charge, and Leutu ultimately pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter.
During questioning, Leutu reportedly claimed that Dennis had placed him and the other man in headlocks and had hit and kicked them. However, investigators said the surveillance footage contradicted his account of the confrontation.
The second man involved in the beating was not arrested alongside Leutu, and the investigation initially identified him as an outstanding suspect.
Prison Sentence Follows Guilty Plea
Leutu’s sentence of three to eight years in prison brings a major development in the criminal case stemming from Dennis’ death.
Before sentencing, the court received letters of support from Leutu’s sister and a friend. His friend described him positively in a letter submitted to the judge.
The case began with a brief dispute outside a food bank but escalated into a fatal encounter. Dennis’ death and Leutu’s conviction underscore how quickly a confrontation in a public place can turn into a serious criminal case.
With Leutu sentenced, the case has reached a significant point in court, while questions surrounding the involvement of the second man remain separate from the sentence imposed on him.
