A Missouri man has been convicted of eight criminal charges in connection with the 2022 killings of two women in Qulin, bringing a long-running case to a guilty verdict. Stephen T. Scott was found guilty by a Phelps County jury of two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action related to the killings, first-degree endangering the welfare of a child, another count of armed criminal action connected to the child-endangerment charge, unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful possession of a weapon. MADISON, Wis. — A Madison man accused of driving a Range Rover at an extremely high speed before a November 2025 crash that killed three passengers is now facing 16 felony charges and remains in custody on a $750,000 cash bond. Kyle Stansil, 40, was arrested by Monona police on Aug. 25 in connection with the fatal crash on Cross Country Road. Madison police said excessive speed, alcohol and drugs were factors in the collision. A Florida mother was killed and her 13-year-old daughter was critically injured in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 10 in Madison County after the two were returning home from dropping off the woman’s older daughter at college. Terri Pollock, 35, was driving east on I-10 with her younger daughter, Tariji Cone, when their SUV was struck head-on by a sedan traveling west in the eastbound lanes. SANTA FE, N.M. — A black bear spent Monday high in a tree at Fort Marcy Park, drawing attention from local officials as preparations continue for Santa Fe’s annual Burning of Zozobra. The bear was spotted in the park Monday morning, where officers and animal services personnel responded and began monitoring the situation. The animal remained in the tree through Monday afternoon. A 66-year-old man in Circle, Alaska, has been charged with first-degree murder after another man was fatally shot at his home during an evening when the two had been drinking, according to Alaska State Troopers and court documents. Troopers received a report of a homicide in Circle at about 8 p.m. on Aug. 28. Investigators with the Alaska Bureau of Investigation and the Fairbanks Rural Unit responded to the remote community to investigate the death. Authorities identified the suspect as Walter V. John. A 13-year-old boy from Spirit Lake died after he was reported missing while swimming across the Spokane River in Post Falls on Saturday, Aug. 29. Nicklas Reid Beckstead was swimming near Ironhorse Circle when he went missing, according to information released following the incident. Emergency crews responded, and members of a dive team later located him in the river. Nicklas was taken to Kootenai Health for medical treatment, but lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful. Two people have been arrested after authorities removed 15 animals from a Seward County property where deputies said they found dogs, kittens and a cat living in severely unsanitary conditions. The investigation began Aug. 15 after a Seward County sheriff’s deputy received information about animals being kept in poor conditions at a property in Tamora. When the deputy arrived, several dogs were reportedly tied with cables and ropes and were walking through their own feces and urine. A routine Sunday morning swim in Lake Tahoe turned into a violent wildlife encounter for a Reno woman after a river otter attacked her near Hidden Beach. Lynnette Bellin, an experienced open-water swimmer and swim instructor, was swimming along the lake’s east shore between Hidden Beach and Incline Village on Aug. 30 when something suddenly grabbed her leg and pulled her underwater. At first, Bellin thought another person had grabbed her because of the force of the attack. She soon realized she was dealing with a river otter.
