Baltimore is starting the new school year with a stretch of pleasant weather before rain and thunderstorms become more likely later this week.

Baltimore City Public Schools welcomed students back Monday, Aug. 24, and Maryland’s state school calendar also lists Aug. 24 as the first day for students in Anne Arundel County.

Monday morning is expected to be comfortably cool, with temperatures generally in the low to mid-60s around the Baltimore area. Some locations outside the immediate metro could start the day in the upper 50s.

For students heading to bus stops and families getting an early start, the weather will remain dry. Plenty of sunshine will help temperatures climb into the lower 80s during the afternoon, while humidity stays relatively low.

That comfortable pattern is expected to hold through the middle of the week, with morning temperatures mostly in the 60s and afternoon highs in the low to mid-80s. Humidity should remain limited through Wednesday afternoon.

Rain chances increase later this week

The weather pattern is expected to become more unsettled as the week progresses.

A chance for showers and thunderstorms could begin increasing Wednesday night, with a more noticeable threat developing Thursday and Friday afternoons. Temperatures are also expected to rise into the upper 80s as humidity returns, making it feel warmer than the actual temperature.

That change could affect outdoor plans across the Baltimore area toward the end of the week, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours.

Ravens game could see unsettled weather

The Baltimore Ravens are scheduled to host the Washington Commanders in their final preseason game Friday, Aug. 28, at M&T Bank Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. ET.

An early forecast points to temperatures in the mid-80s around game time, along with a chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms. The forecast will become more reliable as Friday gets closer.

Baltimore’s weather is expected to remain relatively quiet at the beginning of the school week before the warmer, more humid and stormier pattern develops toward the end of the week.
