A powerful round of severe thunderstorms swept across the Pittsburgh area Thursday evening, bringing tornado warnings, flash flooding, damaging winds and widespread power outages across western Pennsylvania. The fast-moving storms left neighborhoods dealing with fallen trees, blocked roads and flooded streets as emergency crews worked overnight to respond to damage.

By early Friday, more than 120,000 utility customers across the region remained without electricity after strong wind gusts damaged power lines and utility infrastructure. Restoration efforts continued through the night as crews assessed the extent of the damage.

The National Weather Service issued multiple tornado warnings as the strongest storms crossed Allegheny, Beaver, Westmoreland and surrounding counties. Officials later said the threat of severe weather ended late Thursday night, although isolated showers could still develop afterward.

Heavy rainfall quickly overwhelmed roads and low-lying areas, prompting flash flood warnings in several communities that had already experienced storms earlier in the day. Videos shared from across the region showed vehicles trapped in floodwaters, intersections submerged and debris scattered across streets after intense rainfall.

Pittsburgh Mayor Corey O’Connor urged residents to stay cautious, saying the storms created dangerous conditions throughout the city. Public safety officials reported flooding in multiple neighborhoods along with numerous downed trees and power lines, asking drivers to avoid flooded roads and obey road closures while cleanup crews responded.

The damage stretched well beyond the city.

In Unity Township in Westmoreland County, a large tree crashed into a vehicle outside an Eat’n Park restaurant after strong winds swept through the area. In Beaver Borough, residents described widespread destruction after what officials believe may have been a microburst, with dozens of trees snapped or uprooted across neighborhoods.

In Mt. Lebanon, emergency responders dealt with high water near Cedar Boulevard and Greenhurst Drive after a vehicle became submerged in floodwater. The Oakmont Volunteer Fire Department also advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel while hazardous road conditions persisted.

Utility companies reported thousands of outages across Allegheny County and neighboring communities. Duquesne Light said its crews were working as quickly and safely as possible to restore service, while FirstEnergy reported extensive outages affecting customers throughout the Pittsburgh region.

Emergency officials reminded residents never to drive through flooded roadways, warning that water can hide washed-out pavement or strong currents capable of carrying away vehicles.

As cleanup continued Friday morning, crews focused on clearing fallen trees, repairing damaged power lines and restoring electricity to affected neighborhoods. Authorities encouraged residents to report outages, stay away from downed power lines and remain alert for any lingering hazards left behind by the storms.
