Two women have died and several other people were injured after a chain-reaction crash involving multiple vehicles and pedestrians in the Bronx on Friday afternoon, October 9.

The collision occurred near the intersection of Allerton Avenue and Holland Avenue at approximately 2:15 p.m., prompting an emergency response from police and medical crews.

According to the New York City Police Department, an 81-year-old man was driving a white Mercedes-Benz westbound on Allerton Avenue when he failed to stop as he approached traffic ahead. The vehicle struck two cars from behind, setting off a series of collisions that also involved pedestrians crossing the street.

Four women, reportedly between their 50s and 60s, were struck during the incident. Two later died from their injuries, while another pedestrian remained in critical condition. The fourth woman suffered a leg injury and was receiving medical treatment.

Nine People Taken to Jacobi Hospital

Emergency responders transported nine people to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi following the crash. The injured included pedestrians and people who had been inside the vehicles involved in the collision.

The crash caused significant damage in the surrounding area. Video of the incident showed the Mercedes accelerating along Allerton Avenue toward the intersection before striking pedestrians and several vehicles.

The force of the collision sent victims into the roadway, while debris reportedly reached nearby businesses. The incident unfolded within seconds, leaving witnesses shaken by the severity of the impact.

One witness who reviewed the footage described the distance some victims were thrown by the collision, highlighting the force of the impact.

Driver’s Actions Before the Crash Under Investigation

Witnesses said the driver appeared to indicate that he had been unable to stop his vehicle. One witness recalled hearing him say he could not stop, although the reason for the apparent loss of control has not been established.

Investigators are examining the circumstances leading up to the crash, including whether a medical episode or another factor may have contributed. Authorities have not confirmed a definitive cause.

The investigation will be important in determining why the Mercedes continued toward the intersection and struck both pedestrians and vehicles.

Investigation Continues After Fatal Bronx Collision

The crash has raised urgent questions about what happened at the busy Allerton Avenue and Holland Avenue intersection that afternoon. Investigators are continuing to piece together the sequence of events using available evidence, including video footage and witness accounts.

Police have not announced any arrests in connection with the collision. The driver’s actions and the circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation.

As authorities work to establish what led to the deadly incident, two families are facing the loss of loved ones, while the injured victims continue to receive medical care.
