A north Phoenix hiking trip ended in tragedy for Lauren Heike in April 2023 after investigators said she was chased along a trail and fatally stabbed. More than three years later, the man accused in her death has admitted responsibility in court.

Teasley, 25, entered a guilty plea to first-degree murder on October 2, 2026, in connection with Heike’s death. Under the plea agreement, he is expected to receive a natural-life prison sentence, meaning he would not be released from prison. The formal sentencing hearing is scheduled for December 4.

The plea also means prosecutors will no longer pursue the death penalty that had previously been sought in the case. Heike’s family, who had supported the state’s earlier effort to seek capital punishment, said they agreed with the plea agreement because it avoids a trial and guarantees that Teasley will remain imprisoned.

    What happened to Lauren Heike

Heike was hiking alone on a trail in north Phoenix on April 28, 2023. Investigators later determined that she had been attacked after entering the trail near the area of 65th Street and Mayo Boulevard.

Her body was discovered the following day in a desert area near a residential neighborhood. Investigators found personal belongings and other evidence in the area, while an autopsy determined that Heike had suffered 15 stab wounds. She also had injuries to her hands and forearms consistent with trying to defend herself.

Police said surveillance footage showed Heike walking along the trail, with Teasley traveling in the same general direction before both disappeared from the camera’s view. Investigators believed Heike was chased and may have gone over or through a barbed-wire fence before reaching the area where she was found.

The case eventually turned toward Teasley after investigators found DNA on Heike’s shoe that matched him. Police also used cellphone-location information and other evidence to connect him to the area.

    Investigation led police to Teasley

Teasley lived less than two miles from where Heike was killed. Investigators also learned that he had recently been fired from a job after concerns were raised about his behavior toward female co-workers, according to records cited in the case.

Police said a manager also recognized Teasley in surveillance footage from around the time of the killing. Investigators had previously learned that he routinely carried a folding pocketknife, although authorities did not establish in the initial investigation that the specific knife was recovered and used in the killing.

When questioned by police, Teasley identified himself in a surveillance photograph. Investigators also showed him an image of Heike, whom he said he recognized from news coverage.

At the time, Teasley denied planning to kill anyone and gave investigators an account that did not amount to an admission of the murder. The case nevertheless continued as prosecutors built their case against him.

    Guilty plea ends long-running case

The case had been heading toward a capital murder prosecution. In January 2024, prosecutors formally filed a notice indicating they intended to seek the death penalty.

That changed with Teasley’s October 2026 guilty plea.

The agreement calls for a natural-life sentence, and the judge is scheduled to formally impose the sentence on December 4. A separate criminal case involving Teasley is also expected to be addressed at the same time.

Teasley had also been charged in a separate case involving the sexual exploitation of a minor. Recent reporting says he pleaded guilty to one count in that case as well, with sentencing scheduled for the same December 4 hearing.

For Heike’s family, the plea brings an end to the uncertainty surrounding a case that began with her death on a trail near her home.

Her family said the agreement will spare them from having to sit through a murder trial and hear the details of the killing in court. They also said they found relief in knowing Teasley would not be released from prison.

The final sentence will be determined at the December hearing.
