A tense encounter in West Philadelphia ended with seven police officers opening fire on a 37-year-old man who was reportedly holding a gun to his head before allegedly pointing it toward officers. The man was struck multiple times and remained in critical condition after being taken to a nearby hospital, according to police.

The shooting occurred Friday evening, October 23, on the 5100 block of Funston Street. Authorities said the incident began with reports of an armed man in the street and developed into a prolonged effort to persuade him to put down his weapon.

Philadelphia police First Deputy Commissioner John Stanford said officers were responding at approximately 5:15 p.m. after receiving a call about a person carrying a gun. At the same time, officers near 52nd and Race streets were alerted by a resident who reported seeing the armed man nearby.

When officers reached Funston Street, they found the man standing in the roadway with a firearm pointed at his own head.

Officers Tried to Talk the Man Into Dropping His Gun

According to Stanford, officers initially attempted to communicate with the man and convince him to surrender the weapon. Police treated the situation similarly to an open barricade incident, in which an armed individual is outside rather than secured inside a building.

Authorities said the man continued holding the gun as officers tried to manage the situation and maintain a safe distance.

Surveillance footage captured part of the encounter, including officers attempting to communicate with him. Police said the interaction continued for a period of time before the situation escalated.

The man eventually moved toward a neighboring abandoned property on Funston Street. Investigators said he then pointed the gun in the direction of officers.

Seven officers discharged their firearms during the encounter, Stanford said. The group included four patrol officers and three supervisors.

The man suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Officers transported him to a nearby hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

Police said the man did not appear to have fired his weapon at officers.

A Domestic Incident Had Been Reported the Previous Night

Investigators are also examining events that occurred less than 24 hours before the shooting.

Stanford said officers had responded to the same block Thursday evening for a domestic-related incident involving the man and his partner.

According to police, tensions appeared to resurface the following evening. Authorities believe the renewed situation may have contributed to the events that led to the man going outside with a firearm.

Police have not released a complete account of the earlier incident, and the circumstances surrounding the man’s actions remain under investigation.

Officials said the domestic-related call will be reviewed as part of the broader inquiry into the shooting. Investigators will need to establish the sequence of events, examine available video and other evidence, and determine what happened during the officers’ attempts to resolve the confrontation.

What Happens After a Police-Involved Shooting?

All seven officers who fired their weapons are being placed on leave or administrative duty under department policy while the investigation proceeds.

Philadelphia Police Department procedures provide for separate reviews of officer-involved shootings. The department’s Officer-Involved Shooting Investigation Unit examines the circumstances surrounding the incident, while its Internal Affairs investigators review whether department policies were followed. The Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office also reviews officer-involved shootings.

Investigators typically examine available video footage, witness accounts, physical evidence and other relevant information to reconstruct what happened.

The reviews are intended to establish the facts surrounding the use of force and determine whether the officers’ actions complied with applicable law and department policy.

The administrative status of the officers does not, by itself, establish whether their actions were justified or improper. Those questions depend on the evidence gathered during the investigation.

    Investigation Remains Ongoing

The shooting left the 37-year-old man hospitalized in critical condition, while authorities continued working to establish the full circumstances behind the confrontation.

Police have identified the domestic-related incident from the previous evening as an important part of the inquiry, but officials have not publicly established a definitive explanation for the man’s behavior.

Investigators are expected to review the available evidence before reaching conclusions about the incident and the officers’ use of force.

For now, the key unanswered questions include the precise sequence of events leading up to the gunfire, what the available footage shows, and whether the officers followed department procedures during the encounter.

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional details may emerge as authorities complete their review.
