A 55-year-old West Virginia woman is facing murder and arson charges after investigators determined that her husband and 21-year-old daughter died before a fire consumed the family’s home in rural Jefferson County.

Nicole Taylor has been charged with first-degree murder, arson and using or presenting a firearm during the commission of a felony in connection with the deaths of 56-year-old Robert Taylor III and his daughter, Cynthia Taylor, according to the West Virginia State Police.

The case began in late September 2025, when emergency crews responded to a home on Blackberry Lane near Harpers Ferry after a fire was reported.

Taylor survived the blaze but suffered serious burn injuries. She was taken by helicopter to a regional burn center for treatment.

Inside the damaged home, investigators found Robert Taylor and Cynthia Taylor dead.

At first, the deaths were investigated as part of the residential fire. As investigators continued examining the scene and evidence, however, authorities determined that the two victims had died before the fire spread through the house.

Investigators say Robert Taylor had been shot multiple times and died from his gunshot wounds. Authorities have not publicly disclosed how they believe Cynthia Taylor died.

The investigation later shifted into a criminal case.

According to state police, the West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office determined that the fire was intentionally set. State troopers then developed evidence they say connected Nicole Taylor to both her husband’s shooting and the fire.

Two other adult children of the family were also treated for minor injuries following the fire and survived.

The investigation involved multiple agencies, including the West Virginia State Police, the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The agencies worked on the case for months before Taylor’s arrest.

Taylor was taken into custody Tuesday and remains held at the Eastern Regional Jail without bond, according to authorities.

The charges mark a significant development in a case that initially appeared to involve a deadly house fire but later became a homicide investigation.

The case remains ongoing, and the allegations against Taylor have not been proven in court. Further details about the circumstances surrounding Cynthia Taylor’s death and the events leading up to the fire may emerge as the criminal proceedings continue.
