A 22-year-old Virginia man is facing serious criminal charges after his 5-month-old son suffered fatal injuries, with prosecutors alleging that the father admitted to shaking the infant because he wanted him to stop crying.

Nathan Travis-Nunnally is charged with felony homicide, child abuse and aggravated malicious wounding in connection with the baby’s death in Hopewell, Virginia. The case returned to court on October 15, when prosecutors presented a recorded phone conversation in which the defendant allegedly described what happened before the child became unresponsive.

The infant was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries on June 14. He died five days later, turning an emergency call into a criminal investigation that has now moved toward grand jury consideration.

What Happened the Morning the Baby Was Injured?

Authorities were called at approximately 10:40 a.m. on June 14 to the 4900 block of Oaklawn Boulevard in Hopewell, a city roughly 20 miles south of Richmond.

Officers with the Hopewell Police Department and personnel from the Hopewell Fire Department arrived to find a 5-month-old boy unresponsive.

First responders provided emergency assistance before transporting the child to a nearby hospital for treatment of a life-threatening injury.

Despite medical efforts, the baby died on June 19.

Investigators subsequently arrested Travis-Nunnally, who was taken to Riverside Regional Jail as the case developed.

    Recorded Conversation Presented in Court

During the October 15 preliminary hearing, prosecutors played a recorded cellphone conversation between Travis-Nunnally and the child’s uncle.

According to the statements presented in court, the defendant allegedly acknowledged becoming frustrated with the baby and shaking him.

“I just wanted him to be quiet,” he reportedly said during the conversation.

He allegedly went on to describe yelling at the infant before picking him up and shaking him. He also reportedly said that he told the baby to shut up because the child was being irritable.

According to the account presented by authorities, Travis-Nunnally said the baby suddenly went limp. He then called for help.

The recorded conversation has become an important part of the allegations in the case. However, the charges remain accusations, and the evidence will be subject to the legal process as the case proceeds.

Baby’s Mother Was in Jail When the Incident Occurred

The child’s mother told a local television station that she was serving a weekend jail sentence when her son was injured.

She also said that she and Travis-Nunnally had previously been engaged but had ended their relationship.

The circumstances surrounding the parents’ relationship and the mother’s absence are part of the background of the case. The central criminal allegations concern what happened to the infant on June 14 and the injuries that ultimately led to his death.

Charges Sent to a Grand Jury

Following the preliminary hearing, the judge sent the charges forward for consideration by a grand jury, which was expected to review the case in December 2026.

A grand jury considers whether sufficient grounds exist for formal charges to proceed. Its review is a separate stage from a trial, where evidence is examined and guilt must be established under the applicable legal standard.

Travis-Nunnally faces three serious charges: felony homicide, child abuse and aggravated malicious wounding. The precise legal consequences would depend on the charges ultimately pursued, the evidence presented and the outcome of the proceedings.

As of the reported October 15 hearing, no trial outcome had been established.

Why Shaking an Infant Can Cause Life-Threatening Injuries

The case also highlights the dangers of shaking a baby, whose developing brain and delicate neck structures make sudden, forceful movement particularly dangerous.

Shaking can cause severe brain injury, bleeding around the brain, retinal damage and other potentially fatal complications. Serious injuries may occur even when there are no obvious external marks.

Medical professionals often describe severe injuries caused by violent shaking or similar actions as abusive head trauma. Symptoms can include difficulty breathing, extreme sleepiness, vomiting, seizures, loss of consciousness or a sudden change in responsiveness.

A baby who becomes limp or unresponsive needs immediate emergency medical attention. Anyone who suspects a child has been shaken should call emergency services rather than waiting for symptoms to improve.

Caregivers who become overwhelmed by persistent crying should place the baby safely on their back in an empty crib, step away briefly while keeping the child in a safe environment, and contact someone who can provide support. A baby should never be shaken, struck or handled violently.

Investigation Moves Toward Its Next Stage

The Hopewell case has progressed from an emergency response in June to a preliminary hearing in October, where prosecutors presented the recorded conversation and the allegations against the child’s father.

The next expected milestone is the grand jury’s consideration of the charges in December.

Until further proceedings take place, the allegations against Travis-Nunnally remain subject to the court process. The investigation and upcoming legal steps will determine how the case moves forward following the death of the 5-month-old boy.
