A disturbing incident at a Kentucky retirement community has led to the arrests of two men after police say a 92-year-old woman was attacked by her husband while a designated caregiver recorded the incident instead of stepping in to help.
Terrence Gabie, 41, was arrested Wednesday and charged with knowingly abusing or neglecting an adult. Investigators allege that he witnessed the attack, took out his cellphone and recorded a 71-second video while the elderly woman was in immediate danger.
The woman’s husband, Bert Morris, 92, was also arrested and faces charges including attempted murder related to domestic violence and first-degree strangulation.
The incident unfolded shortly after midnight Wednesday at StoryPoint Brownsboro, a senior living community in Louisville. What authorities discovered raised serious questions not only about the alleged attack but also about the responsibility of employees entrusted with protecting vulnerable residents.
Police respond to an emergency at the retirement community
Louisville Metro Police officers were dispatched to the facility on Overlook Drive after receiving a report of a domestic violence incident.
When officers arrived, they learned that staff members had intervened in an assault involving an elderly female resident.
According to investigators, Morris allegedly placed a plastic bag over his wife’s face and pinched her nose, preventing her from breathing. The woman was reportedly struggling for her life before emergency assistance arrived.
Paramedics transported her to a nearby hospital for treatment. Authorities have not released an update on her condition.
The seriousness of the incident became clearer when investigators reviewed video footage recorded inside the facility.
Caregiver allegedly recorded the attack instead of helping
Gabie was reportedly assigned to care for the 92-year-old woman at the retirement community. Police allege that he witnessed Morris attempting to suffocate his wife but chose to record the incident on his phone.
The video reportedly lasted 71 seconds.
According to the allegations outlined in court documents, Gabie knew the woman was in danger but failed to provide assistance or take action to protect her.
Investigators said the attack continued until another nurse stepped in and intervened.
The allegations have drawn attention to the responsibility of caregivers working with elderly residents, particularly those who may have limited ability to defend themselves or seek help during an emergency.
In senior living facilities, employees are expected to monitor residents, recognize signs of distress and respond when someone faces an immediate threat. Their responsibilities can include alerting emergency services, notifying supervisors and taking appropriate steps to protect residents.
Police have not publicly explained why Gabie allegedly chose to record the incident rather than intervene.
Husband allegedly told police his wife needed to die
Morris was arrested following the incident and questioned by investigators.
During the conversation, he allegedly told police that his wife “needed to die.”
He now faces serious criminal allegations connected to the attack, including attempted murder related to domestic violence and first-degree strangulation.
The reported statement is among the details investigators are examining as they work to establish what happened inside the couple’s residence at the facility and what led to the confrontation.
Authorities have not publicly provided further details about the couple’s relationship, any possible history of domestic violence or what may have happened before the alleged assault.
Retirement community responds to the investigation
StoryPoint Brownsboro acknowledged the incident and said it was cooperating with law enforcement.
In a statement, a spokesperson said the community was working closely with investigators but could not discuss specific details while the case remained under investigation.
The company also emphasized that protecting residents remains its highest priority.
The statement comes as the investigation raises concerns about how senior living communities respond when residents face violence or medical emergencies.
Facilities caring for older adults rely on employees to remain attentive and respond quickly when residents need assistance. Delays in recognizing or responding to an emergency can have serious consequences, especially when a resident is physically vulnerable.
Why caregiver responsibilities matter in cases like this
Elderly residents in assisted living and retirement communities often depend on staff members for everyday support, supervision and help during unexpected emergencies.
That responsibility becomes particularly important when a resident cannot independently move away from danger or call for help.
Caregivers are generally expected to follow facility emergency procedures, report suspected abuse and seek immediate assistance when a resident’s safety is threatened. Depending on the circumstances and applicable state requirements, failing to respond to suspected abuse or neglect can also result in criminal or regulatory consequences.
Kentucky has legal protections for vulnerable adults, including requirements concerning the reporting of suspected abuse, neglect and exploitation.
The allegations against Gabie are particularly concerning because investigators say he was specifically assigned to care for the woman involved.
The investigation will now have to address what he witnessed, what assistance was available and why another employee ultimately had to intervene.
Investigation continues as woman’s condition remains unknown
Both men were arrested Wednesday, but the investigation remains ongoing. The charges against them are allegations, and any determination of criminal responsibility will be made through the court process.
For now, authorities have not disclosed the woman’s current medical condition or whether she has been released from the hospital.
The case has left serious questions about the events inside the Louisville retirement community, including how an alleged attack could continue while a caregiver was present and recording it.
For families with loved ones living in senior care facilities, the incident is also a reminder of the importance of staff accountability, proper supervision and reliable emergency response procedures.
Residents and their families place enormous trust in caregivers to provide help when it matters most. In this case, investigators allege that the person assigned to protect a vulnerable woman failed to act when she needed assistance.
