A deadly shooting inside a downtown Tacoma parking garage has left a family grieving the loss of a 16-year-old boy and raised serious questions about an alleged act of retaliation. One of the suspects, 18-year-old Jose Campos, drew attention during a court appearance after reportedly blowing a kiss toward people in the courtroom gallery as he was led away.
Campos, his 20-year-old brother, Davion Campos, and Davion’s 19-year-old wife, Alina Guillen, are facing charges in connection with the death of Josiah Midgyett, who was fatally shot early Sunday, October 18, 2026.
The case took another turn on October 22, when authorities announced that a fourth suspect, a teenage boy, had been arrested in connection with the killing. His arrest adds another development to an investigation into a shooting that prosecutors believe may have been planned in advance.
Investigators allege that several armed individuals arrived at the parking garage on Commerce Street and opened fire on a group of people. Midgyett was among those caught in the gunfire.
All three adult defendants have entered not guilty pleas. The allegations against them have not been proven in court.
What happened inside the parking garage?
Police were dispatched to the area near 1100 Commerce Street at approximately 2:23 a.m. on October 18 after reports of gunfire.
Officers arriving at the scene found Midgyett suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds. Emergency responders attempted lifesaving measures, but the teenager died at the scene.
According to court documents, Midgyett had been on the fourth level of the parking garage with a group of people when the shooting began.
A friend told investigators that Midgyett had received a text message from a girl about meeting at the garage earlier that night. Prosecutors allege that the gathering became the setting for a targeted attack.
Witness accounts described as many as five gunmen arriving at the location. Most were reportedly wearing masks, making it more difficult for people at the scene to identify them.
Investigators believe the attackers fired multiple weapons into the crowd. Prosecutors have described the incident as a planned execution, although that characterization remains an allegation that will be tested through the legal process.
Midgyett was reportedly trying to get into a vehicle with his friend when he was shot in the chest.
His death has left his family facing the loss of a teenager whose life was cut short in a violent incident.
Prosecutors suspect the shooting was retaliation
One of the central questions in the case is why the attack happened.
According to information presented in court, investigators received a tip suggesting that the shooting was connected to an injury Jose Campos had suffered the previous night.
Prosecutors told the court that Campos had been shot in the hand approximately 24 hours before the fatal garage shooting. They believe the incident may have prompted a retaliatory attack.
Deputy prosecuting attorney Lisa Wagner pointed to the bandage on Campos’ arm during the hearing as she explained the theory.
She also told the court that surveillance footage allegedly showed Campos among the armed individuals wearing a mask.
“This certainly seems to be a planned execution,” Wagner said, describing the alleged arrival of several suspects carrying multiple firearms.
Investigators are examining witness statements and other evidence to establish the roles of the individuals involved and whether the shooting was connected to the earlier incident.
The alleged motive remains part of the prosecution’s case, rather than an established finding of guilt.
How investigators connected the suspects to the shooting
Authorities relied on several investigative leads to identify the three adult defendants.
According to court documents, detectives examined surveillance footage from the garage and compared images from the scene with photographs found on social media.
One detail involved Davion Campos. Investigators said a photograph on his Facebook page showed him wearing a blue puffer jacket that appeared to match clothing worn by a person captured in surveillance footage.
Police also examined social media information that allegedly connected Davion Campos to Guillen. Photographs of Guillen were compared with images from the surveillance video, according to the court documents.
These leads helped detectives develop probable cause to arrest the three adults.
Police arrested Jose Campos in east Tacoma on October 19. Davion Campos and Guillen were arrested in Yelm, Washington, later that day.
All three were booked into the Pierce County Jail before appearing in court.
Investigators have not publicly established every detail of the alleged attack, and the evidence will be evaluated as the criminal proceedings continue.
A fourth suspect is arrested
The investigation expanded on October 22, when police confirmed the arrest of a teenage boy in connection with Midgyett’s death.
The teenager was booked into Remann Hall, a juvenile detention facility, making him the fourth person arrested in the case.
The arrest is significant because witnesses described a group of as many as five gunmen at the scene. Authorities have not publicly confirmed that every person described by witnesses has been identified or arrested.
Investigators have also not disclosed all the details surrounding the juvenile suspect’s alleged role.
Because the fourth suspect is a teenager, his case may proceed under different rules from those governing the three adult defendants. The specific charges and any further court proceedings will determine how his case moves forward.
The additional arrest indicates that the investigation has continued beyond the initial arrests, although important questions about the shooting remain unresolved.
Weapons and serious criminal charges
Prosecutors allege that the group arrived armed with multiple firearms, including an AK-style handgun commonly known as a Draco and other weapons.
The allegations include the use of illegally possessed or modified firearms. Investigators are examining how the weapons were used during the attack and which individuals allegedly carried or fired them.
Jose Campos faces a first-degree murder charge, multiple assault charges and a firearms-possession charge. Davion Campos also faces a first-degree murder charge, assault charges and a firearms-possession charge. Guillen has been charged with murder and assault.
The precise counts differ among the defendants. The charges reflect the prosecution’s allegations and do not establish that any defendant committed the offenses.
The potential consequences are substantial. First-degree murder and serious assault convictions can carry lengthy prison sentences under Washington law, depending on the specific offense and circumstances.
The court proceedings will determine which allegations can be supported by admissible evidence.
Judge sets high bail amounts
During the defendants’ court appearances on October 21, prosecutors requested substantial bail amounts, citing the seriousness of the allegations.
The judge set bail at $5 million for each of the Campos brothers and $1.5 million for Guillen.
Defense attorneys entered not guilty pleas on behalf of the defendants.
Midgyett’s mother also addressed the court during the hearing, asking that the suspects not be released on bail.
“My son didn’t deserve this,” she said, expressing the grief of a parent who has lost a child.
Her statement brought the human cost of the case into focus. While investigators work to establish what happened and prosecutors prepare their case, Midgyett’s family must cope with a loss that cannot be undone.
Campos reportedly blew a kiss toward the courtroom gallery as he left the hearing. The gesture attracted attention, but the central issue before the court remains the evidence surrounding the teenager’s death.
A family seeks answers after a teenager’s death
The fatal shooting has raised concerns about violence involving young people and the devastating consequences of alleged retaliation.
Investigators believe an earlier shooting may have played a role in the attack, but the circumstances surrounding that incident and its connection to the garage shooting remain important questions.
Even when investigators identify a possible motive, establishing individual responsibility requires evidence showing what each defendant allegedly did and whether the legal elements of the charges have been met.
The case also illustrates the importance of surveillance footage, witness cooperation and digital evidence in investigating shootings involving multiple suspects. Investigators can use these sources to reconstruct events, but their findings must still be tested through the court process.
For Midgyett’s family, the legal proceedings cannot bring him back. Their statements in court have made clear the personal cost of the violence and their desire for accountability.
As the investigation continues, authorities may provide additional information about the fourth suspect and whether anyone else is believed to have participated in the shooting.
For now, the three adult defendants remain charged, the fourth suspect is in juvenile custody, and the allegations surrounding the deadly attack will be addressed through the legal system.
