A man has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run crash that seriously injured a Riverside Poly High School student last week, according to Riverside police.

The crash happened around 3:40 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4, near Victoria Avenue and Myrtle Avenue in Riverside. Police said multiple people called to report that a vehicle had struck a Poly High student and then left the area.

The student, whose name has not been released, was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Police said the student remained hospitalized a week after the crash but was in stable condition.

Investigators worked to identify the vehicle and the person behind the wheel after the crash. Information provided by members of the public, along with data from automated license plate reader systems in the area, helped detectives develop a lead.

Police identified the suspect as a 47-year-old man from Bloomington. Investigators later located the vehicle, which was unoccupied at the time, and had it impounded as part of the investigation.

After detectives contacted the suspect, police said he turned himself in Thursday.

The man was arrested and booked on suspicion of felony hit-and-run. Police have not publicly released his name.

The investigation highlights the role of public information and available technology in helping detectives identify a suspect after a driver leaves the scene of a serious collision.

Riverside police thanked residents who provided information during the investigation, saying those tips, along with investigative tools and traditional police work, helped detectives develop leads in the case.

The investigation remains subject to the legal process, and the suspect is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
