A Pennsylvania woman convicted in the death of her 5-year-old adopted son has been sentenced to decades in prison after prosecutors presented evidence of repeated abuse, disturbing text messages and a fatal brain injury that doctors said was catastrophic.

Lauren Maloberti, 37, will serve between 31½ and 63 years in state prison following her conviction for third-degree murder in the death of Landon Maloberti. She was also convicted of two counts of aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of children and conspiracy.

The case centered on what happened to Landon while he was in the care of his adoptive family, along with evidence suggesting that the abuse had begun well before the boy was taken to the hospital.

Prosecutors presented text messages in which Lauren allegedly described beating the child. Her husband’s testimony also became a significant part of the case, helping investigators and jurors examine what the couple had said about Landon’s condition and the events leading up to his death.

Her husband, Jacob Maloberti, 46, is facing separate proceedings in connection with the case.

A hospital visit that revealed the severity of Landon’s injuries

On January 30, 2023, Lauren and Jacob brought Landon to a hospital in Westmoreland County, southeast of Pittsburgh. The child was unconscious and suffering from a catastrophic brain injury.

Medical personnel also discovered that he had sustained more than 100 injuries to his body, according to authorities.

The couple’s reported behavior when they arrived drew attention from hospital staff. Medical workers said they did not appear to show urgency, while Lauren allegedly suggested that the boy was still unsteady because he had experienced COVID about a month earlier.

Landon was transferred to a children’s hospital for further treatment. A doctor described the extent of his brain damage as severe, using the word “obliterated” to convey the seriousness of the injury.

Despite medical care, the boy died approximately one week later.

Authorities identified blunt-force trauma as the cause of death. A forensic examination also revealed evidence of earlier injuries and abuse, indicating that the fatal incident was not the only concern surrounding his treatment.

The findings prompted investigators to look beyond the final hours of Landon’s life and examine what had happened inside the home before he was hospitalized.

    Text messages became important evidence

Investigators uncovered messages exchanged between Lauren and Jacob that prosecutors used to support their case.

In July 2022, Lauren allegedly sent her husband a text saying, “I just got done beating your son,” followed by a remark indicating that she was still awake.

Another exchange from the following month reportedly involved a warning about Landon’s behavior.

When Jacob asked whether the child had said anything to her, Lauren allegedly responded, “He’s gonna get it.”

Prosecutors argued that the messages helped establish a pattern of abuse rather than an isolated incident. They also became important as investigators attempted to determine what Jacob knew about the treatment of the child.

The messages were particularly significant because they provided a written record of communications between the adults months before Landon’s death.

During the trial, jurors heard evidence about the child’s injuries, the family’s account of his medical condition and the messages that prosecutors said documented violence against him.

Husband’s testimony added another dimension to the case

Jacob Maloberti testified against his wife during the proceedings in May. His account offered jurors insight into the explanations he said he had received about Landon’s condition and what he later learned about the child’s death.

He told the court that his trust in the person he believed he was married to had been completely shattered.

Jacob also said he struggled to understand how the explanation he had been given about what happened to their son could have been different from what investigators uncovered.

His testimony was central to the prosecution’s case, although his own legal situation remains separate from his wife’s conviction.

According to the district attorney’s office, Jacob is awaiting further court proceedings. He has not been sentenced in connection with the case, and his legal status should not be confused with the verdict against Lauren.

The separate proceedings mean that questions about his role, knowledge and responsibility will be addressed through his own legal process.

Investigators heard allegations of abuse inside the home

The case also included accounts from other children in the household.

Prosecutors said Lauren treated her other children differently from Landon. According to the allegations presented during the investigation, the children described incidents in which their mother allegedly smacked Landon, forced him to drink from a toilet and used a camera to monitor his movements.

These accounts added to the evidence suggesting that the boy had experienced mistreatment before the injury that ultimately led to his death.

Authorities said Landon was under the care and supervision of his adoptive family in the period leading up to his death. The forensic findings of earlier injuries further supported investigators’ concerns about the child’s treatment.

Lauren and Jacob were arrested in July 2023, several months after Landon’s death.

The investigation eventually resulted in criminal charges against both adults, though their cases have followed separate paths through the courts.

    What the sentence means

Lauren’s sentence ranges from 31½ to 63 years in state prison. The lengthy term follows her conviction for third-degree murder and the additional offenses involving aggravated assault, child welfare and conspiracy.

In Pennsylvania, third-degree murder is distinct from first-degree murder, which requires proof of a specific intent to kill. A third-degree murder conviction generally involves an unlawful killing with malice but without the specific intent required for first-degree murder.

The distinction matters because criminal charges and sentencing depend on the legal elements prosecutors prove at trial. In Lauren’s case, the jury returned a third-degree murder verdict, along with the other convictions.

Her sentence reflects the seriousness of the offenses for which she was found guilty. The case also illustrates how evidence from different sources—including medical findings, communications between family members and witness testimony—can come together in a criminal prosecution.

Jacob’s separate proceedings remain an important part of the broader case, but the sentence announced for Lauren applies to her convictions.

A case that began with a child’s medical emergency

Landon’s death initially came to authorities’ attention when he was brought to the hospital unconscious. What followed was an investigation into the injuries on his body, the explanation given for his condition and the history of alleged abuse inside his home.

The evidence ultimately presented in court included medical findings, text messages and testimony from his adoptive father. Together, prosecutors argued, those details showed that Landon’s injuries were the result of abuse rather than an unexplained medical condition.

For the court, the case ended in a murder conviction and a sentence that could keep Lauren Maloberti in prison for the remainder of her life.

For Landon, the investigation came too late to save him. His death remains at the center of a case that has raised serious questions about the treatment of a vulnerable child and the circumstances that allowed the abuse to continue before he received emergency medical care.
