Jacob Bailey, 38, and Renee Carpenter, 43, have each been sentenced to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the death of their roommate, 34-year-old Robert Sikes, in Vinita, Oklahoma.
The case began in September 2025, when authorities responded to a home on South Foreman Street after Sikes was found suffering from serious injuries. He was taken to a hospital but later died. An examination by the medical examiner determined that the injuries were consistent with homicide, prompting a broader investigation.
Investigators eventually identified Bailey and Carpenter as suspects. The two had been living with Sikes, and authorities determined that he had suffered extensive physical abuse before his death.
According to information from the investigation, Carpenter told police that Sikes was sometimes restrained with pink handcuffs because his nighttime behavior allegedly irritated the couple. She also admitted to striking him and said Bailey had beaten him as well.
Bailey later told investigators that he had beaten Sikes until he became unresponsive. The autopsy found 69 fractures involving multiple parts of Sikes’ body, along with internal bleeding and a ruptured bowel. Investigators also found evidence of older injuries, indicating that the physical abuse may not have been limited to the incident that caused his death.
The accounts given by Bailey and Carpenter changed during the investigation. Carpenter eventually acknowledged her involvement in the abuse, while Bailey described an incident in which she allegedly stepped on Sikes’ throat to stop him from calling for help.
The couple told investigators they did not seek medical assistance or contact authorities after Sikes became unresponsive because they were afraid they would get into trouble.
Bailey and Carpenter were initially charged with first-degree murder as investigators examined the circumstances surrounding Sikes’ death. Their cases ultimately ended with guilty pleas to second-degree murder on September 25, 2026.
A judge sentenced both defendants to 25 years in prison, bringing the criminal case to its latest stage nearly a year after Sikes’ death.
The case has highlighted the extent of the injuries investigators said Sikes sustained while living with the couple and the failure to seek emergency help after his condition became critical.
