A dispute involving money from a vehicle purchase escalated into a violent attack in North Memphis, where a man was allegedly lured to a home, forced to remove his clothing, shot in the thigh and beaten, Memphis police said.
The incident happened Wednesday, September 23, near Pope Street and Omar Robinson Street. According to investigators, the victim was picked up by Bailey Jobin, 23, Joseph Polk, 20, and another unidentified man and taken to the area.
Police said Jobin was involved in getting the victim into the vehicle. Investigators later identified Polk as the person who allegedly drove him to the location.
Once they arrived, a man known to the victim by the nickname “One-legged Jay” reportedly confronted him over money connected to an earlier vehicle purchase. The situation quickly became more serious.
According to the police account, the victim was forced to strip and was directed toward the backyard. He refused and told those involved that they would have to kill him there.
Police said Polk then pulled out a handgun and shot the man in his right thigh. Two other men allegedly attacked him afterward, punching him in the head and knocking out several of his teeth.
The victim’s cellphone was also reportedly taken during the incident.
Police identify and arrest two suspects
After the victim was taken to Baptist East Hospital, investigators spoke with him about what happened. Police said he provided information that helped them identify the people involved.
Investigators later located Polk after tracing a black 2013 BMW connected to the investigation. Police said officers initially attempted to stop the vehicle on Jackson Avenue, but the driver fled.
A Flock camera later captured the BMW near Watkins and Jackson Avenue. Officers found the vehicle unoccupied and then located a man nearby who was identified as Polk, according to the police account.
Polk was taken to police headquarters for questioning. Investigators said he acknowledged being under the influence of multiple intoxicants and was considered unable to provide a statement at that time.
Jobin and Polk were subsequently arrested in connection with the case.
Charges filed in the case
Jobin faces a serious robbery charge. Polk faces the robbery charge along with additional allegations involving a firearm, possession of a firearm as a convicted felon, theft of property valued between $2,500 and $10,000, evading arrest and driving without a valid license, according to the latest local reporting.
Police have not said that all of the people allegedly involved in the attack have been arrested.
The victim’s current medical condition has not been publicly detailed in the latest reports.
The allegations remain part of an ongoing criminal case. Being arrested or charged does not mean a person has been found guilty in court.
