A man was shot by a Sayreville police officer Saturday evening after police responded to a report of a disorderly person armed with a knife in the Parlin section of the borough, according to the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.

The incident happened around 6:15 p.m. Aug. 22 in the area of Kendall Drive, where police had been called after receiving a report that a man with a knife was allegedly menacing people and a vehicle.

When officers arrived, they encountered the man armed with a knife, authorities said. An officer ordered him to drop the weapon, but the man did not comply and advanced toward the officer.

The officer then fired his weapon, striking the man, according to the prosecutor’s office. The man was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick for treatment of his injuries.

Authorities have not publicly released the man’s name or the name of the officer involved in the shooting.

The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office is conducting the investigation after being designated as the independent investigator by the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office. The investigation remains active.

Authorities said the man was also charged with multiple offenses related to conduct that allegedly occurred before police arrived. Specific charges have not been released.

Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has surveillance footage from the Kendall Drive area to come forward. Information can be provided to Detective Ryan Kirsh of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office at 732-745-3711.

The investigation is expected to establish more details about what happened before the officer fired and the circumstances leading up to the confrontation.
