A Los Angeles Fire Department rescue ambulance carrying a patient to a hospital was involved in a collision with another vehicle in Boyle Heights Wednesday afternoon, leaving three LAFD members with minor injuries and one civilian seriously injured.

The crash was reported at about 1:57 p.m. near the 300 block of South Boyle Avenue at Fourth Street, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Five people were identified at the scene following the collision. LAFD said one civilian was transported to a hospital in serious condition. Another civilian and three LAFD members were reported to have minor injuries.

The patient being transported in the ambulance was already in serious condition before the crash, according to fire department officials. The ambulance was taking that patient to a nearby hospital when the collision occurred.

The crash involved the LAFD rescue ambulance and another vehicle. Images from the scene showed the ambulance alongside a red sedan with significant damage to its front end.

Emergency crews responded to the intersection following the collision, and the crash temporarily affected traffic in the area.

Officials have not released details about what led to the collision. No information was immediately available indicating whether either vehicle had violated a traffic signal or what circumstances preceded the crash.

All five people involved were adults, according to LAFD officials. Their identities have not been released.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision remains ongoing.
