MADISON, Wis. — A Madison man accused of driving a Range Rover at an extremely high speed before a November 2025 crash that killed three passengers is now facing 16 felony charges and remains in custody on a $750,000 cash bond.

Kyle Stansil, 40, was arrested by Monona police on Aug. 25 in connection with the fatal crash on Cross Country Road. Madison police said excessive speed, alcohol and drugs were factors in the collision.

The crash happened about 1:28 a.m. on Nov. 8, 2025, in the 6800 block of Cross Country Road on Madison’s southwest side.

According to investigators, the Range Rover was traveling east at a high rate of speed before leaving the roadway and rolling. All four occupants were thrown from the vehicle. Three passengers died at the scene, while Stansil survived with serious injuries and was taken to a hospital.

The victims were identified as Makiewa Turner, 43; Allen C. Wright, 50; and Kadija Barry, 31. A small dog also died in the crash.

    What investigators allege

A probable cause affidavit indicates that Stansil and several passengers had been drinking at a bar before the crash. A person who encountered the group before they left reportedly described Stansil as “tipsy.”

Investigators determined that the vehicle was traveling at nearly 105 mph before the crash. It struck a No Parking sign and dragged the sign more than 300 feet before returning toward the roadway and losing control.

Police also said none of the occupants were wearing seat belts when the vehicle rolled.

Stansil was initially taken to a hospital in critical condition. His attorney later told the court that he spent months hospitalized and in rehabilitation following the crash and continued to receive medical treatment.

    Charges filed after the investigation

Stansil faces 16 felony counts connected to the deaths of the three passengers.

The charges include three counts each of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, homicide by use of a vehicle with a prohibited alcohol concentration and first-degree reckless homicide. He also faces six counts of homicide by vehicle use of a controlled substance.

An arrest warrant was issued Dec. 23, 2025, but Stansil was not taken into custody until August.

Madison police said additional drug charges related to his arrest by Monona police were pending.

    Court sets $750,000 cash bond

Stansil made his initial court appearance after his arrest, where a court commissioner set cash bond at $750,000.

Prosecutors argued for a substantial bond, citing the seriousness of the allegations and concerns about Stansil’s history of failing to appear for court proceedings.

His defense attorney argued that the amount was excessive and pointed to the extensive medical treatment Stansil underwent after the crash.

Prosecutors also alleged that Stansil had been involved in selling drugs while the case was pending. That allegation is separate from the crash charges and has not been established as a conviction.

If released, Stansil would be required to wear a GPS monitor and undergo alcohol and drug monitoring. He would also be prohibited from contacting the victims’ families and from leaving Wisconsin without permission.

Victim’s mother asks court to keep Stansil jailed

Sophia Barry, the mother of victim Kadija Barry, spoke during the bond hearing and asked the court not to release Stansil.

She said she believed he posed a risk and expressed concern about the possibility of his release.

The case has continued nearly 10 months after the crash as investigators and prosecutors worked to build the charges against Stansil.

    What happens next

Stansil is scheduled to return to Dane County court for a preliminary hearing on Sept. 3, 2026.

The hearing is expected to be the next major step in the case as prosecutors seek to establish probable cause for the charges.

Stansil has been accused of the offenses but has not been convicted. The charges remain allegations unless and until they are proven in court.
