FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Flowers, handwritten notes and other tributes are appearing near the site of a deadly crash that shook downtown Fort Collins over the weekend.
Joshua Robert Douglass, 33, was killed Saturday after a Chevrolet pickup truck entered the sidewalk in the area of West Mountain Avenue and College Avenue, striking several pedestrians before coming to a stop near a tree and an ice cream shop.
The crash happened at about 11:44 a.m. Aug. 29, when Old Town was unusually busy as people gathered for the annual Tour de Fat bicycle parade and related activities. Police said the pickup had first reversed from a parking space and struck another vehicle before moving forward onto the sidewalk.
Six people were initially taken to hospitals following the crash, including the driver. One pedestrian later died, while others were treated for injuries.
The incident unfolded in an area crowded with pedestrians shortly after the bicycle parade had ended. Witnesses described a sudden and confusing scene as people tried to move away from the truck while others rushed toward those who had been hurt.
James Mikolajek, who had been in the area for Tour de Fat, recalled hearing the truck move onto the sidewalk and continue through the crowded area.
People nearby began helping the injured before emergency crews took over the scene. Mikolajek said the response from people who stopped to assist stood out to him amid the chaos.
The crash also left witnesses trying to understand what had happened and whether the vehicle had entered the pedestrian area intentionally.
Police have not indicated that investigators believe the crash was a deliberate act. Investigators are examining whether a medical emergency or possible impairment may have contributed to the incident. The investigation remains ongoing.
Douglass’s family has identified him as the person who died. Messages from relatives describe him as deeply loved, and the memorial near the crash site has continued to grow as people come to pay their respects.
The crash occurred during one of the busiest periods of the day in Old Town, making the incident particularly unsettling for people who had gathered for the cycling celebration.
Fort Collins police have not publicly identified the driver or announced criminal charges in connection with the crash. Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding what caused the truck to leave the roadway and enter the sidewalk.
For those who knew Douglass, however, the investigation is only part of what the community is facing. In the days following the crash, the flowers and personal messages left near the scene have become a visible reminder of a life lost during what had otherwise been a busy weekend in downtown Fort Collins.
