A shelter dog looking for a home found an unexpected second chance when a family recognized her in an old puppy photo — and realized she was the sister of their beloved dog who had died the year before.

Ginger, a senior border collie-German shepherd mix, had returned to Pasadena Humane in 2025 after spending about 12 years with another family. Her owner’s health problems had made it impossible to continue caring for her.

The shelter shared Ginger’s adoption profile on Facebook on Aug. 21, including recent photographs as well as a picture of her from 2013, when she was still a puppy.

That older photograph caught the attention of Shelley Showalter while she was scrolling through her social media feed. She recognized one of the puppies immediately.

It was Dakota, the dog her family had adopted from Pasadena Humane years earlier.

“Once I saw the picture of the two puppies together, we went right over,” Vickie Showalter said.

Vickie and her daughter quickly made their way to the shelter. They already knew the puppy in the old photograph because Dakota had been part of their family for more than a decade before she died from cancer in 2024.

The resemblance was not the only connection. Shelter records confirmed that Ginger and Dakota had come from the same litter.

The family had originally wanted Ginger

The discovery made the story even more remarkable.

When the Showalters first visited the shelter in 2013, Ginger was among the puppies they were considering. Instead, they met Dakota and ultimately chose to take her home.

Ginger, Dakota and another sibling, Maverick, had arrived at Pasadena Humane together with their mother. After being adopted, the puppies went to separate homes and lived very different lives.

Dakota became a much-loved member of the Showalter family for more than a decade. Ginger spent years with another household before circumstances eventually brought her back to the shelter.

By the time the Showalters saw her photograph again, Dakota was gone.

Still, Vickie said the similarities between the sisters were striking. The family could compare the markings from the old puppy photograph and immediately recognized Dakota’s sister.

The two dogs, however, did not have identical personalities.

Dakota had been energetic, strong-willed and especially fond of playing fetch. Ginger was noticeably more laid-back and showed little interest in balls or toys.

“She’s very different,” Showalter said. “But they look alike.”

Ginger quickly found her new home

The Showalters did not spend much time wondering whether they should adopt Ginger.

They brought her home, giving the senior dog a familiar connection to the family that had once considered adopting her as a puppy.

The timing was especially meaningful because Dakota had died only the previous year. For Vickie, welcoming Ginger into the family became a way of carrying forward some of the love she still had for Dakota while allowing Ginger to have a comfortable home in her senior years.

Vickie said Ginger sometimes reminds her of Dakota, particularly when she looks up at the family in a familiar way.

“I almost feel like Dakota is coming through her,” she said.

Several months after the adoption, Ginger had settled comfortably into her new surroundings. According to Pasadena Humane’s later update, she had adjusted beautifully and appeared completely at ease in her new home.

The shelter had initially been concerned that Ginger’s age could make finding another family more difficult. Senior dogs can spend longer periods waiting for adopters, particularly after returning to a shelter following years in a home.

Instead, Ginger’s story took an unusually quick turn.

A photograph from more than a decade earlier happened to appear in a Facebook post, someone recognized a familiar face, and a dog who had already lost one home found herself with a family that had been connected to her since puppyhood.

For the Showalters, the coincidence feels bigger than chance.

“I am just thankful that it popped up on my daughter’s computer,” Vickie said. “Somebody wanted her to find us. That’s how I feel.”
