A North Carolina woman has been charged with murder after a 21-month-old child in her care died from injuries that authorities say were caused by blunt force trauma.
Stephanie Kay Johnson, 37, was arrested in Yadkin County and faces charges of murder and intentionally inflicting serious bodily injury on a child. Investigators say the child was Johnson’s great-niece and was in her care when the fatal injuries occurred.
The case began April 30, when emergency crews and deputies were called to a home on Bob’s Lake Road in Hamptonville following a report of a medical emergency involving the toddler.
First responders attempted to save the child at the scene, including performing CPR, before transporting her to a nearby hospital. Medical personnel continued treating the toddler, but she later died from her injuries.
As investigators examined what had happened, they reportedly found indications that the child had suffered trauma that was not consistent with an accidental injury. The investigation continued as detectives worked to determine how the injuries occurred and who was responsible.
An autopsy later provided a key finding in the case. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined that the child’s death was a homicide and identified blunt force trauma as the cause of death.
According to an arrest warrant issued Oct. 8, authorities allege that Johnson caused the injuries while she was responsible for caring for the toddler. The murder allegation also states that the killing involved “malice aforethought,” a legal term generally associated with an intent to kill or conduct showing an extreme disregard for human life.
A separate charge accuses Johnson of intentionally causing the serious bodily injury that ultimately resulted in the child’s death.
The investigation has involved multiple agencies, including the Yadkin County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigative Division and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. The county’s Department of Social Services also opened an investigation following the toddler’s death.
The child’s family has described her as a happy and loving little girl. Relatives were preparing to hold a memorial service to remember her and honor her short life.
Johnson was taken into custody without incident and remains in the Yadkin County Jail. Authorities said she is being held without bond.
The criminal charges are allegations, and Johnson is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. The investigation and court proceedings are expected to provide additional details about what led to the child’s death and the circumstances surrounding the alleged abuse.
