A DeSoto, Texas, dog’s death during a stretch of extreme summer heat has sparked a dispute between the animal’s owner and a neighbor who says the dog was left outside in dangerous conditions.

Rocko, a 2-year-old Goldendoodle, died at his DeSoto home in August. Neighbor Jaida Grace said she had repeatedly seen the dog outside and became concerned after noticing him spending extended periods in the yard during triple-digit temperatures.

Grace said she captured video of Rocko outside near the home and later saw the dog appearing to be in distress on the lawn.

“It was breaking my heart,” Grace said.

According to Grace, she worked from home and regularly noticed Rocko while taking her own dog outside. She said the dog was often tethered in the yard and that her concerns increased as temperatures climbed.

She eventually contacted DeSoto Animal Control.

Grace said animal control responded the following day, but by then Rocko was unresponsive.

“He was still outside on his leash, but he was unresponsive,” Grace said. “He wasn’t moving. He was just laying down.”

    Owner disputes neglect allegations

Rocko’s owner strongly disputes the claim that the dog was neglected.

The owner said Rocko normally stayed in a shaded area on the family’s patio, with food and water available. He described the dog as a beloved family pet who had been adopted as a rescue after previously living in poor conditions.

The family said they invested significant time and money into Rocko’s care, including veterinary treatment, grooming and boarding when they were away.

According to the family’s account, Rocko was boarded from Aug. 1 through Aug. 6 while they were away on business.

The owner said Rocko was normally under close supervision and spent his evenings and nights inside the home. He said the dog also slept beside him each night.

The family believes something went wrong on Aug. 7, when Rocko became tangled in his leash after apparently moving away from his usual shaded area.

According to the owner, Rocko struggled to free himself, became exhausted and eventually collapsed.

The family considers his death an unfortunate accident and says allegations that Rocko was abused, neglected or unloved are false.

    Police investigation closed

DeSoto police investigated Rocko’s death and closed the case without charges, according to the latest reporting on the incident.

That decision has not ended the controversy.

Grace has continued to seek accountability and launched an online petition after Rocko’s death. The petition had collected more than 17,000 signatures as of Friday, reflecting the level of public attention the case has received.

Grace said her goal is not only to seek answers about Rocko but also to encourage people to report situations when they believe an animal may be in danger.

She said the experience has been deeply upsetting because she had regularly seen Rocko while caring for her own dog.

“It’s been a very traumatizing experience,” Grace said.

Texas law sets requirements for dogs kept outside

The controversy has also drawn attention to Texas rules concerning dogs that are kept outdoors on restraints.

Under Texas law, an owner cannot leave a dog outside and unattended on a restraint without providing access to adequate shelter, an area that allows the animal to avoid harmful conditions, shade from direct sunlight and potable water. The law also places restrictions on the type and length of restraints that may be used.

The law does not, however, determine what happened in Rocko’s case. Police have closed their investigation without filing charges.

The circumstances surrounding Rocko’s final hours remain disputed between the neighbor and the family.

Family says threats have followed the controversy

Rocko’s owners said the attention surrounding the case has brought threats and raised concerns about their safety.

They maintain that Rocko was cared for as a member of the family and that his death was not intentional or the result of neglect.

For Grace, the incident remains a painful reminder of how quickly extreme Texas heat can become dangerous for animals.

The disagreement over Rocko’s death may continue among neighbors and online, but authorities have closed the investigation, leaving the competing accounts of what happened in the yard at the center of the controversy.
