An Uber Eats delivery in Philadelphia’s Center City area took a frightening turn after a driver said a man approached her vehicle and demanded her phone.
Kayla Culp said she was making a delivery near Chestnut and 13th streets late at night when the man approached her car. According to Culp, he told her to hand over her phone.
She refused.
Culp said the situation quickly became more threatening when the man reached toward the inside of her vehicle through an open window. She began sounding the car horn in an attempt to draw attention, but said no one came to help.
With the man still near the vehicle, Culp decided to leave. She said the man grabbed onto the car as she drove away, forcing her to accelerate to get clear of the situation.
Culp later reported the incident to police. She said the experience also changed her plans to continue making deliveries for extra income.
The incident highlights the risks delivery workers can face when making late-night stops, particularly when they are alone and unfamiliar with the immediate surroundings.
Culp said she does not plan to continue driving for Uber Eats after the encounter.
