An investigation into the welfare of two young children in Goodyear, Arizona, has led to child abuse charges against a husband and wife accused of physical abuse and neglect.
Kebrina Hussain, 30, and Ezekiel Hussain, 29, were arrested after police investigated reports involving an 8-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy who were allegedly mistreated while in the couple’s care.
The investigation began in early August after school staff noticed that the girl had lost a significant amount of weight and appeared extremely thin. Staff also reportedly observed bruising on her face and an injury to her lip, prompting concerns about her health and safety.
What initially raised concerns about the child’s physical condition eventually led investigators to examine allegations of inadequate food, repeated injuries and abuse involving both children.
According to Goodyear police, medical evaluations and interviews with the children helped investigators build a case that resulted in charges against the couple.
School Staff Raise Concerns About the Girl’s Health
The investigation began when school personnel noticed changes in the 8-year-old girl’s appearance that raised questions about her well-being.
Police said the child appeared severely underweight and had experienced substantial weight loss. Medical professionals later documented malnutrition, bruising and injuries to the bottom of her foot.
Doctors reportedly found no medical explanation for the malnutrition. After the girl received adequate nutrition, she gained significant weight, strengthening concerns that she had not been receiving enough food.
For investigators, the combination of unexplained weight loss and visible injuries prompted a closer examination of the circumstances surrounding the children’s care.
School employees can play an important role in identifying potential child abuse because they often see children regularly and may notice physical or behavioral changes that others miss. In this case, the concerns reported by school staff brought the children’s situation to the attention of law enforcement.
Investigators Describe Allegations of Repeated Physical Abuse
During the investigation, the girl allegedly told authorities that she had been denied regular meals and physically assaulted.
Police records state that she described being punched and slapped, along with repeated injuries to the bottom of her foot.
According to arrest affidavits, investigators allege that Ezekiel Hussain used a metal, pointer-like object to repeatedly injure the child’s foot until it bled. The alleged incident reportedly followed a situation in which crumbs attracted ants inside the apartment.
Authorities also allege that the couple used additional forms of physical punishment against the girl.
According to the affidavits, the child was allegedly subjected to chili peppers being rubbed on her buttocks before being struck with a belt. Investigators say the actions were intended to increase the pain.
The allegations describe conduct that went beyond ordinary disciplinary measures and prompted detectives to investigate possible repeated abuse.
The claims remain allegations in a criminal case, and the defendants are entitled to due process as the proceedings move forward.
Police Say a Second Child Was Also Harmed
Investigators also uncovered allegations involving the 7-year-old boy.
According to police records, the couple allegedly held the boy’s hand against a hot stovetop, causing pain and bruising.
Authorities said the investigation involved examining the circumstances surrounding both children rather than focusing exclusively on the girl’s injuries and weight loss.
Detectives searched the family’s home, reviewed earlier law enforcement contacts involving child welfare concerns, interviewed witnesses and coordinated forensic interviews and medical examinations.
These steps helped investigators assess the available evidence and determine whether there was probable cause to pursue charges.
Police ultimately concluded that the evidence supported child abuse charges against both Kebrina and Ezekiel Hussain involving the two children.
How the Investigation Developed
The case illustrates how concerns reported by people who regularly interact with children can lead to a broader investigation.
School personnel first noticed the girl’s physical condition. Medical professionals subsequently documented injuries and malnutrition, while investigators gathered statements and other evidence to examine the allegations.
Forensic interviews are designed to allow trained professionals to speak with children about potentially traumatic experiences in an age-appropriate setting. Medical examinations can also help document injuries and assess whether a child’s condition requires treatment.
In cases involving alleged abuse, investigators may consider several sources of evidence, including medical findings, witness accounts, statements from children and information gathered during searches.
Goodyear police said the evidence collected during this investigation established probable cause to believe that both suspects had committed child abuse involving the two children.
Probable cause is the legal threshold used to justify certain law enforcement actions and criminal charges. It is not the same as proof beyond a reasonable doubt, which prosecutors must establish to obtain a criminal conviction.
Police Emphasize the Importance of Reporting Suspected Abuse
Goodyear Police Sgt. Mayra Reeson credited the school personnel who raised concerns about the girl’s condition.
“This case underscores the importance of reporting concerns about a child’s safety,” Reeson said in a statement. She noted that the decision to speak up brought the matter to law enforcement’s attention and initiated an extensive investigation.
Authorities regularly encourage people who suspect a child is being harmed or neglected to report their concerns to the appropriate child protection agency or law enforcement department.
Warning signs can include unexplained injuries, sudden or significant weight changes, persistent hunger, poor hygiene, or a child expressing fear about returning home. None of these signs automatically proves abuse, but a concerning pattern may warrant professional assessment.
When a child appears to be in immediate danger, contacting emergency services can help secure urgent assistance.
In Arizona, suspected child abuse can also be reported to the Arizona Department of Child Safety. Reports can help trained professionals assess a child’s circumstances and determine whether protective intervention is necessary.
Couple Held on $25,000 Bond Each
Kebrina Hussain and Ezekiel Hussain were charged with child abuse in Maricopa County following the investigation.
Police said both suspects were being held on bond set at $25,000 each.
The allegations involve two children, with investigators citing concerns about nutritional neglect and physical injuries. The case followed a series of investigative steps, including medical evaluations, witness interviews and a search of the residence.
The available information does not establish the final outcome of the criminal proceedings, and no conviction should be inferred from the charges.
For now, the investigation serves as a reminder of the importance of taking concerns about children’s health and safety seriously. In this case, school staff noticing a child’s dramatic weight loss prompted a chain of events that brought the allegations to the attention of authorities.
As the legal process continues, the central questions will be what the evidence establishes, how the allegations are addressed in court and what steps are taken to protect the children involved.
