A quiet residential neighborhood in Gastonia, North Carolina, was shaken by a deadly shooting that claimed the life of a 68-year-old woman sitting on her own back porch. Days after the killing, police announced that two teenagers had been arrested in connection with the case, including one who authorities say was preparing to leave the country.

Pamela Shanks was at her home on Hillgate Avenue on October 19, 2026, when gunfire erupted, according to investigators. Her home sits across from Dwell Townhomes, in a neighborhood just west of Charlotte.

Neighbors reported hearing several gunshots. Shortly afterward, some residents said they saw a group of young people running away from the area. It remains unclear whether the teenagers later arrested were among those seen leaving the scene.

When officers arrived, they found Shanks dead. Police began investigating the shooting and working to identify those responsible.

The case has since led to arrests in two different locations, with assistance from multiple law enforcement agencies.

Two Teenagers Arrested in Connection With the Killing

The Gastonia Police Department confirmed that two minors had been taken into custody in connection with Shanks’ death. Authorities have not publicly released their names because of their ages.

One of the suspects, a 16-year-old, was arrested Friday at Dulles International Airport near Washington, D.C. Police said he was attempting to leave the country for Africa when authorities apprehended him.

The arrest involved assistance from the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force and federal immigration authorities.

A second suspect, aged 17, was arrested in northern South Carolina on Tuesday, according to police.

The arrests brought investigators closer to resolving key questions about the shooting, although authorities have not publicly explained what led to the violence or what role each teenager allegedly played.

Police have also not announced a suspected motive. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish the circumstances surrounding Shanks’ death.

Neighbors Describe Fear and Relief After the Arrests

The shooting has left residents struggling to understand how such violence could occur in their neighborhood.

For people who live nearby, the incident was especially disturbing because Shanks was reportedly sitting outside her own home when she was killed.

One resident expressed concern about raising children in the area following the shooting, saying the incident had affected their sense of safety.

Another resident said they were relieved that the people believed to have caused harm in the community had been apprehended.

Their reactions reflect the uncertainty that can follow a violent crime in a residential neighborhood. Even after arrests are made, residents may continue to seek reassurance that the circumstances have been fully investigated and that those responsible will be held accountable through the legal process.

What Investigators Still Need to Establish

Although two teenagers have been arrested, several important details remain unknown.

Police have not disclosed a motive, explained whether the shooting was targeted or described any known connection between the suspects and Shanks. Authorities have also not clarified whether the group reportedly seen running from the scene included either of the arrested teenagers.

Investigators will need to establish the sequence of events, examine the available evidence and determine the alleged actions of each suspect as the case proceeds.

Because both suspects are minors, some information may remain restricted under applicable juvenile justice and public-records laws. The extent of information released publicly will depend on the circumstances of the case and the relevant legal procedures.

An arrest is not a conviction, and the allegations must be addressed through the judicial process.

    A Community Waiting for Answers

For Gastonia residents, the case is about more than two arrests. It has raised difficult questions about how a woman could lose her life while sitting outside her own home and what led to the shooting in the first place.

Shanks’ death has left neighbors with grief, concern and unanswered questions. Authorities have not yet provided a public explanation for why she was shot or whether she knew the people suspected of involvement.

For now, police continue to investigate as the case moves forward. Additional information about the motive, the evidence and the charges could help clarify what happened on Hillgate Avenue that October day.

Until then, the circumstances surrounding Pamela Shanks’ death remain under investigation, and the community is waiting for answers.
