A camping trip near Lake Superior turned into a medical emergency for a 7-year-old Elgin boy and his mother after lightning struck their tent in northern Wisconsin.
Finn Jorgenson and his mother, Brittany, were camping near Herbster, Wisconsin, when lightning hit their tent. Both were seriously injured and were being treated in a burn unit at a Minnesota hospital, according to CBS Chicago’s report published Aug. 28.
Finn suffered second-degree burns across about 25% of his body, with some areas of third-degree burns expected to require surgery. His recovery is expected to take months.
Family Friend Performed CPR
Amanda Glabus, a family friend who was camping with Finn and Brittany, said she initially thought the loud blast was a firework.
Then she heard screams coming from the tent.
Glabus said Brittany told her they had been struck by lightning and that Finn appeared lifeless. Glabus immediately began CPR on the boy, using skills she had learned as a child.
She continued chest compressions until Finn regained a pulse and began breathing. Glabus said he later lost his pulse again before emergency responders arrived.
Finn was eventually taken to a hospital in Duluth, Minnesota, where he received treatment for his burns.
Father Credits Family Friend With Saving Finn
Finn’s father, Evan, said Glabus’ quick response was critical.
He credited her decision to begin CPR with helping keep his son alive.
The family now faces a long recovery period. Finn is expected to remain away from his home in Elgin for months as he undergoes treatment and rehabilitation.
Brittany was also seriously injured in the strike and is being treated alongside her son.
Family Asking for Support
The family has established a GoFundMe fundraiser to help cover medical expenses and support Finn’s recovery.
For the family, the incident has also brought a painful reminder of how quickly a camping trip can turn dangerous during severe weather.
Glabus said the experience has changed the way she thinks about being prepared for emergencies and spending time with family.
The immediate focus for Finn and Brittany remains their recovery as they continue treatment in Minnesota.
