WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. — A 63-year-old Washington Township woman died Saturday evening after the ATV she was operating overturned and landed in a pond, according to police.
The crash happened around 7:16 p.m. Aug. 29 near 5 Morris Canal Trail, where Washington Township police were called after receiving a report of an ATV that had gone into a pond.
Police said a preliminary investigation found that the woman was driving the ATV when it left the roadway for a reason that has not been determined. The vehicle then overturned and entered the water.
Officers pulled the woman from the pond and immediately began CPR. Emergency medical personnel later arrived, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not been publicly released.
Several local emergency agencies responded to the crash, including the Washington Township Fire Department, Washington Emergency Squad, Independence Emergency Squad, Hunterdon Medical Center paramedics and the Warren County Communications Center.
Members of the Washington Township Detective Bureau also responded to process the scene as investigators worked to determine what caused the ATV to leave the roadway.
The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation, and police have not released additional information about what led to the ATV overturning.
