Police are searching for a gray vehicle, possibly an SUV, after a woman was struck while crossing West Washington Place early Sunday morning.
A 22-year-old Brooklyn woman was killed early Sunday after police said she was struck by a vehicle that fled the scene in Greenwich Village.
The crash happened around 5 a.m. Sunday at West Washington Place and Sixth Avenue, according to the NYPD. Police said the woman, identified as Destiny Murrell, was crossing West Washington Place in a crosswalk when she was hit.
Investigators said the vehicle continued north on Sixth Avenue before turning onto Waverly Place.
Murrell was taken to a local hospital by emergency responders, where she was pronounced dead.
Police are now looking for a gray vehicle, possibly an SUV, believed to have been involved in the crash. Investigators have not released a description of the driver.
Witness Corey Schwartz told that he saw a group of people screaming after the crash and found Murrell on the ground. He said he immediately checked her pulse and found that she was still alive before police and an ambulance arrived.
Schwartz also described seeing injuries that appeared consistent with the woman having been dragged.
He said about five people — four women and one man — appeared to have been with Murrell at the time. According to Schwartz, the group was visibly distressed after the crash.
The NYPD has not publicly identified a suspect or announced an arrest in connection with the incident.
The investigation remains ongoing as detectives work to identify the vehicle and driver involved in the fatal hit-and-run.
