A 21-year-old man died after a Des Plaines police officer shot him while responding to a reported domestic disturbance Wednesday afternoon, according to authorities.
The incident happened around 2:32 p.m. Sept. 9 in the 2000 block of Touhy Avenue. Police had been called to a home in the area following a report of a domestic disturbance.
During the response, an officer shot a male resident of the home. The man, identified as Ayham Babidi, was taken to a local hospital for treatment. He was later pronounced dead.
The circumstances leading up to the shooting have not been fully released.
Investigation Underway
The Major Case Assistance Team is investigating the officer-involved shooting and will conduct an independent review of the incident.
Authorities have not publicly explained what happened immediately before the officer fired or whether Babidi had a weapon. Those details remain part of the investigation.
Because the investigation is ongoing, officials have not released a complete account of the encounter between officers and Babidi.
Touhy Avenue Closed During Investigation
A section of Touhy Avenue was closed while investigators worked at the scene.
Police shut down the roadway between Des Plaines River Road and Scott Street and asked drivers to avoid the area while the investigation was underway.
The large police presence drew attention from people living and working nearby. Witnesses described the scene as unusual for the normally quiet neighborhood.
Authorities said there was no ongoing threat to the public.
What Happens Next
The Major Case Assistance Team’s investigation is expected to establish more details about the events that led to the shooting and the actions of those involved.
At this point, officials have not released additional details about the officer involved or provided a full timeline of what occurred inside or around the residence.
The investigation remains active, and further information could be released as investigators continue their review.
