A 17-year-old Pontiac girl was taken into custody Friday after a loaded BB gun was found inside her backpack at Lake Orion High School, authorities said.

The incident began around 8:24 a.m., when authorities received information about a possible handgun at the Oakland County school. A school resource officer was notified and located the student inside a classroom.

The student was removed from the classroom without incident, and deputies and school staff secured her backpack. Inside, authorities found a loaded .177-caliber revolver-style BB gun. The black metal gun reportedly closely resembled an actual handgun, according to officials.

Authorities said the student and the weapon were located in less than 10 minutes after the initial report was received. No injuries or further incidents were reported.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said the quick response showed the importance of taking reports of possible weapons on school grounds seriously.

The student was initially taken to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Orion Township Substation. She was later transported to Oakland County Children’s Village.

The case is now being reviewed by the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office for possible charges. Those charges may include possession of a pneumatic gun in a weapon-free school zone and carrying a pneumatic gun with intent to use it unlawfully against another person.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not announced any additional details about what led to the student bringing the BB gun to school.

No further incident was reported at the school following the response.
