A 15-year-old was seriously injured Wednesday morning after losing control of an all-terrain vehicle in far East El Paso, while a passenger riding with the teen also was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

The crash happened around 9:06 a.m. Sept. 2 in the 13500 block of Timothy Drive, near Desert Wind School, according to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responding to the scene found that the teen had been driving a blue Yamaha ATV westbound along a dirt road. Investigators said the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed before it went over a dirt berm.

The raised section of dirt caused the driver to lose control of the ATV, according to the preliminary investigation.

The 15-year-old was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. The passenger was also transported for treatment, with the injuries initially believed to be minor.

The Sheriff’s Office Special Traffic Investigators unit responded to the crash and took over the investigation. Authorities have not released additional details about the condition of either person.

Sheriff Oscar Ugarte urged ATV riders and parents to take safety precautions, particularly when operating the vehicles at high speeds. He also emphasized the importance of wearing appropriate protective equipment and using ATVs responsibly.

The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
