A 15-year-old girl was killed and another teenage girl was injured Friday night after they were struck by a large truck while riding together on a bicycle in Manhattan’s East Village, police said.
The crash happened around 9 p.m. at East 14th Street and First Avenue. Investigators said the truck was traveling west on East 14th Street when the driver attempted to turn right onto First Avenue and struck the two girls.
Both teenagers were taken to Bellevue Hospital following the collision. The 15-year-old was pronounced dead at the hospital, while the 13-year-old was reported to be in stable condition.
The bicycle involved in the crash was later seen beneath the truck at the intersection. Authorities said the girls were riding together on the same bicycle when they were hit.
The truck appeared to be a hydro-excavation vehicle, according to information reported after the crash. The NYPD Highway Patrol is investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.
The driver remained at the scene after the crash, according to police. No additional information about possible charges had been released as the investigation continued.
