A 13-year-old Canby girl died after she was struck by a white cargo van while riding an electric scooter in a bicycle lane, and police say the driver left the scene before he was later identified and arrested.
The crash happened around 7:20 p.m. on Sept. 23 near the 300 block of South Ivy Street in Canby, Oregon. The girl was taken by Life Flight to Randall Children’s Hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
The victim was later identified as Quinn Broyles after her family chose to share her name and a message with the community. Her family described her as a young leader who was involved in basketball and loved dancing, saying she had made a lasting impression on people around her.
Police Locate Van and Arrest Suspect
Investigators were searching for a white cargo or Sprinter-style van that had left the area after the collision. Surveillance footage helped police identify the vehicle, which was later found several hours after the crash at a Canby residence.
Police arrested 31-year-old Cody Churchwell in connection with the crash. He was booked into the Clackamas County Jail on charges of second-degree manslaughter, failure to perform the duties of a driver, reckless driving and reckless endangering.
During a court hearing, prosecutors said the van had significant damage, including a leaking radiator. Investigators also said Churchwell told them he noticed a bump while driving but did not believe he had hit anything. Prosecutors said he told police he had not been drinking until after he returned home.
Churchwell pleaded not guilty during an earlier court appearance. The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
Family Remembers Quinn Broyles
In a statement shared through police, Quinn’s family said she was more than a daughter and sister, describing her as a teammate, basketball captain, dancer and inspirational young leader.
The family also thanked people in the community for their support following her death and asked for privacy and patience as they cope with the loss.
The crash has drawn attention in Canby because of the young age of the victim. Police said this was the first death involving an e-scooter or e-bike in the city this year, while two other crashes involving these types of vehicles had resulted in injuries.
Churchwell remains in custody at the Clackamas County Jail as the legal case moves forward. The investigation and court proceedings are continuing.
