A 43-year-old Whiting man has died from injuries he suffered after being struck by a vehicle earlier this month in Manchester Township, police said.

Richard J. Fescharek was pronounced dead on Aug. 14, five days after the crash, according to an updated statement from the Manchester Township Police Department.

The crash happened shortly before 9:40 p.m. Aug. 9 near the intersection of County Route 530 and Swift Circle in the Whiting section of Manchester Township. Officers responding to the scene found Fescharek unresponsive in a grassy area near the roadway.

Police said Fescharek entered the roadway in front of a westbound gray 2013 Toyota Camry. The impact sent him about 50 feet toward the northwest corner of the intersection, according to investigators.

Fescharek suffered multiple potentially life-threatening injuries and was flown by medical helicopter to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune for treatment.

The Camry was driven by Rocco Lanzetti, 63, of Wrightstown. Police said Lanzetti was not injured in the crash.

The roadway was partially closed for several hours while officers investigated the collision and crews cleared the scene. Manchester Township EMS, Robert Wood Johnson paramedics, the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit and Accurate Towing assisted at the scene, according to police.

Investigators said the preliminary findings indicate that improper pedestrian crossing may have contributed to the crash. Police have not announced any additional conclusions, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Patrolman Anthony DeBlasio of the Manchester Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit is handling the investigation.
