Two women died after a Jeep Grand Cherokee crashed into a concrete retention wall and caught fire Sunday afternoon in Downingtown, Pennsylvania, according to police.
The crash happened around 12:06 p.m. Sept. 6 in the unit block of East Lancaster Avenue near the Downingtown Log House. Police said the silver Jeep was traveling east when it left the roadway on the westbound side and struck the concrete wall.
The SUV caught fire shortly after the impact.
The driver, an adult woman, died at the scene from her injuries. The front-seat passenger was also seriously injured. Responding officers and a bystander pulled her from the burning vehicle before emergency medical crews treated her and transported her to a local hospital. She later died from her injuries.
Authorities have not released the names of either woman.
East Lancaster Avenue remained closed for several hours while investigators examined the crash scene. The roadway was reopened at about 3 p.m. Sunday.
The Downingtown Police Traffic Safety Unit and the Chester County Coroner’s Office are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. Police have not said what caused the Jeep to leave the roadway, and no additional details about the circumstances leading up to the collision have been released.
