Two children, a 4-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl, were killed in a shooting in Los Angeles’ Pico-Union neighborhood Sunday afternoon, October 11, while a 30-year-old man believed to be responsible for the shooting was hospitalized with gunshot wounds, authorities said.
Police responded shortly before 1 p.m. to reports of gunfire near Venice Boulevard and South Catalina Street. When officers arrived, they found three people suffering from gunshot wounds.
Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics transported all three to nearby hospitals. The two children later died from their injuries, while the man remained hospitalized. Investigators believe he shot the children before turning the gun on himself.
Authorities have not publicly confirmed the man’s relationship to the children, although investigators believe he may be their father. His identity and the children’s identities had not been publicly released in the initial reports.
Investigation Focuses on What Led to the Shooting
Investigators are working to establish what happened before the shooting and what may have prompted the violence. Police have not confirmed a motive, and it remains unclear whether the incident involved domestic violence.
Authorities said they were not looking for additional suspects and did not believe there was an ongoing threat to the surrounding community.
The shooting occurred near a Metro bus, prompting investigators to examine whether footage from the vehicle could help clarify the events. Metro confirmed that police requested video because the bus was passing through the area when the shooting occurred.
Officers secured the scene as detectives continued gathering evidence and examining the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not released further details about the events leading up to the shooting.
