Three people were killed and three others were critically injured in a head-on collision on State Highway 105 near the Washington-Grimes County line in Texas on Thursday evening, October 8.
The crash happened shortly after 5:25 p.m., west of the Brazos River and southwest of Navasota. Investigators say the collision involved a Chevrolet Impala traveling westbound and a Chevrolet Equinox heading eastbound.
According to preliminary findings, the Equinox attempted to pass another vehicle in a no-passing zone before colliding head-on with the Impala. The impact killed two people inside the Impala and a passenger riding in the Equinox.
The victims in the Impala were identified as Wallace Perry, 70, and Gloria Sanders, 70, both residents of Washington, Texas. Brooklyn Imani, 18, of Cypress, was also killed. She had been sitting in the back seat of the Equinox.
Three other occupants of the Equinox suffered suspected serious injuries. The driver, Kayla Bravo, 19, of Cypress, along with passengers Katherine Atwell, 18, of Montgomery, and Leyla Aljaloudi, 18, of Cypress, were airlifted to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston for treatment.
Authorities have said the investigation into the collision remains ongoing. Preliminary information indicates that the attempted pass in the no-passing zone led to the head-on impact. Investigators have not released further details about the circumstances surrounding the maneuver.
The crash forced officials to close a section of State Highway 105 for several hours while emergency crews responded and authorities investigated the scene. The highway has since reopened to traffic.
The collision highlights the serious consequences that can follow an unsafe passing maneuver, particularly on two-way highways where vehicles travel in opposite directions. Drivers should wait until passing is legally permitted and the road ahead is clear before attempting to overtake another vehicle.
Further information about the investigation may be released as it becomes available.
