BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. — A newly filed search warrant is providing more details about the driver involved in a Brooklyn Center crash that killed 6-year-old Dreme Damara Williams and left another young girl critically injured.

The Aug. 27 collision happened around 3 p.m. at Brooklyn Drive and 63rd Avenue North. Williams and another girl were riding a motorized minibike eastbound on 63rd Avenue when they were struck by a vehicle traveling south on Brooklyn Drive.

Emergency crews provided medical aid, including CPR, before both children were taken to North Memorial Health Hospital. Williams later died from her injuries. The other girl, identified in recent reporting as 10 years old, was most recently reported to be in critical but stable condition.

Investigators are now examining whether speed and possible drug impairment played roles in the crash.

According to the search warrant, authorities believe the driver was traveling at an excessive speed before reaching the intersection. A witness also told investigators the vehicle appeared to be moving too fast shortly before the collision.

The intersection does not have stop signs, a detail that has also drawn concern from people living nearby.

Suspected cocaine reportedly found inside vehicle

Investigators said they observed a substance believed to be cocaine on the driver’s seat while examining the vehicle at the scene.

The driver denied consuming alcohol and registered 0.000% on a preliminary breath test. During questioning, however, she reportedly told detectives that she could not remember what happened immediately before the crash and could not explain why she did not see the children before the collision.

The warrant states that after being taken to the police station, the driver acknowledged using cocaine two days before the crash. Officers also reported observing behavior they considered consistent with possible impairment, including the driver appearing to nod off.

Those observations prompted investigators to seek a blood sample to determine whether a controlled substance was present in the driver’s system. A Hennepin County judge authorized the blood draw on the day of the crash.

Court records also indicate that the driver’s license was suspended at the time of the collision.

    Investigation remains active

The case is being investigated as authorities consider possible offenses that include driving under the influence of a controlled substance and criminal vehicular homicide. A search warrant represents investigators’ allegations and evidence-gathering requests; it does not establish that a crime occurred or that the driver was impaired.

The driver remained at the scene following the collision and cooperated with investigators. Brooklyn Center police also requested assistance with the crash investigation, including accident reconstruction.

As of the latest available reporting, no criminal charges have been filed against the driver.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities evaluate evidence from the crash, including the requested blood sample and circumstances surrounding the collision.
