PITTSBURGH — Friday night, high school football returned to George K. Cupples Stadium with noticeably tighter security, less than 24 hours after three teenagers were injured in a shooting outside the Pittsburgh stadium.

Pittsburgh Carrick and Pittsburgh Perry faced off Friday night, with the game taking place under temporary restrictions put in place by Pittsburgh Public Schools following Thursday night’s violence. The game ended without another incident.

The changes affected who could attend and how spectators could move around the stadium. Most spectators had to be at least 18 years old, while additional police and security officers were present. People were also prohibited from loitering outside the stadium, and spectators at Cupples Stadium were required to remain in designated seating areas rather than gathering in walkways or corridors.

    Senior Night brought an exception

The restrictions were especially noticeable because Friday was Senior Night for Pittsburgh Perry.

The district allowed families to attend the Perry game, giving some younger relatives of senior students an exception to the age restriction. Attendance was still much smaller than what is normally expected at a high school football game, with parents and other members of the school community making up much of the crowd.

For some families, the additional security offered reassurance. For others, the restrictions made an important night feel different.

Shekwae Nicholson, whose children attend Perry, said she understood why the district took action but also felt disappointed that students could not attend in the usual numbers.

Senior Night is typically an occasion when families gather to celebrate graduating players and cheerleaders. The restrictions meant that some of the usual school spirit surrounding the event was missing.

    Thursday shooting prompted the changes

The new rules followed a shooting Thursday night near South 9th and East Carson streets, outside Cupples Stadium.

Police said three teenagers — two males and one female — were shot after an altercation as people were leaving the stadium. The victims were taken to local hospitals and were reported to be in stable condition. Authorities said the football game between Westinghouse and University Prep had already ended when the shooting occurred.

Police were still investigating the shooting Friday. A person was taken to police headquarters for questioning but was later released, and no arrests had been reported in the latest available update.

The incident led Pittsburgh Public Schools to place its schools in a secure mode Friday and cancel afternoon and after-school activities, with exceptions for certain football games.

    Parents raise concerns about crowds

Some parents said the restrictions were understandable given what happened, while also pointing to longer-term challenges surrounding large crowds at football games.

Nicholson said she has attended games for years and has seen how difficult it can be for people to leave when buses, students and spectators are all moving through the same area at once.

She suggested that the district consider transportation changes, including buses that could take students back to school after games. She also proposed staggering the departure times for home and visiting fans so large groups would not leave the stadium simultaneously.

Those suggestions reflect a broader concern among some families: keeping games safe may require more than security inside the stadium.

Another family member attending Friday’s game, Brian Lewis, said additional precautions were necessary after the recent violence.

    What happens next

The Friday games were held with the new restrictions and additional security, but it remained unclear whether the same rules would continue for Pittsburgh football games the following week.

For now, the district’s response has focused on controlling attendance, limiting gatherings around the stadium and increasing the police and security presence.

The investigation into Thursday night’s shooting also remains ongoing. With no arrests reported in the latest update, authorities are continuing to work to determine what led to the gunfire outside the stadium.
