A 45-year-old Pennsylvania woman was fatally shot in a Walmart parking lot after finishing her late-night shift, and investigators allege that her husband waited nearby before approaching her as she spoke with a co-worker.

Latosha Cooper was leaving the Walmart in Cheltenham Township on the night of October 21, 2026, when a masked gunman allegedly walked toward her near her Nissan sedan and opened fire. Authorities later identified her husband, 23-year-old Destino Jean-Louis, as the suspect in the killing.

Jean-Louis faces a first-degree murder charge and additional criminal counts connected to the shooting. Investigators say evidence gathered from store surveillance footage, witness interviews and cellphone records helped them reconstruct the events leading up to Cooper’s death.

The case has also brought attention to allegations of domestic abuse, a troubled relationship and growing tensions between the couple before the deadly encounter.

    Coworker Witnesses the Shooting

The shooting occurred at approximately 11:30 p.m., according to investigators. Cooper had finished her shift and walked outside with a female co-worker. The two women headed toward their vehicles and stopped to talk in the parking lot.

The co-worker told police that a man wearing a hooded blue-gray sweatshirt and a face covering walked past her before slowly approaching Cooper.

According to the witness’s account in court documents, the man came up behind Cooper near her vehicle, appeared to grab her upper body and extended his arm before firing.

The co-worker said she believed she heard two or three gunshots. Frightened, she ran toward the store entrance and used her cellphone to contact Walmart employees, asking them to unlock the door. She then told colleagues what had happened and called 911.

Cooper was found beside her Nissan with a fatal gunshot wound to the head. She was later determined to have died from multiple gunshot wounds, and the medical examiner classified the death as a homicide.

The incident left Cooper’s co-worker as a key witness to the final moments of the attack.

Surveillance Footage Helped Investigators Reconstruct the Attack

Investigators reviewed Walmart security footage as part of their effort to determine how the shooter approached Cooper.

According to the criminal complaint, video showed a person pacing and waiting behind a bush near the store. The individual appeared to have a direct view of the main entrance, allowing him to see when Cooper came outside.

Police allege that the suspect moved quickly to catch up with her before approaching from behind as she walked around her vehicle toward the driver’s side.

Authorities believe the footage, combined with the co-worker’s account, helped establish the sequence of events in the parking lot.

Investigators also examined cellphone location data, which allegedly placed Jean-Louis in the area of the Walmart around the time of the shooting. When questioned about his presence there, he reportedly told detectives he did not know how his phone had placed him in the area.

Police further alleged that Jean-Louis left the scene on foot and traveled toward Philadelphia after the shooting.

A Relationship That Had Become Increasingly Troubled

According to investigators, Cooper and Jean-Louis first met while working at the same Walmart and later developed a romantic relationship. Records show they received a marriage license in March 2025.

The couple’s relationship reportedly became strained before Cooper’s death. Investigators interviewed people who knew the pair, including former colleagues who described disagreements and concerns about Jean-Louis’s behavior.

One former colleague told police that the marriage was connected, at least in part, to Jean-Louis’s immigration situation. Another employee made a similar allegation, claiming Cooper had married him to help him remain in the United States.

These statements are allegations contained in investigative records, rather than an independently established determination of the couple’s motives for marrying.

The affidavit also describes allegations of previous physical abuse. One employee reportedly told investigators that Jean-Louis had admitted to assaulting Cooper because he believed she had disrespected him. When challenged about the behavior, he allegedly responded that he would do it again.

The reported history has become an important part of the investigation into what led to the fatal shooting.

Investigators Say He Sought Information About Her Work Schedule

People who worked with Cooper told investigators that Jean-Louis had contacted Walmart employees in an effort to learn when she was scheduled to work.

According to the affidavit, Cooper had told colleagues that she was no longer willing to help Jean-Louis with his immigration situation. She had reportedly cut ties with him, and investigators say he was unhappy about the separation.

Jean-Louis allegedly acknowledged contacting Walmart employees to ask whether Cooper was working. He reportedly explained those inquiries by saying she owed him money.

Investigators also cited comments he allegedly made about their separation and the difficulties in their marriage.

During a police interview, when asked about the relationship, Jean-Louis reportedly said, “She f—ed up my life.”

He also told investigators that the relationship had been difficult. According to the affidavit, he claimed the two began dating in April 2024 and that Cooper had told him she could help him obtain a green card.

The investigation has not established every detail of the couple’s private disagreements, but authorities are examining the alleged pattern of contact and conflict as they build their case.

Cellphone Records and Ammunition Became Key Evidence

Investigators examined Jean-Louis’s cellphone records and identified multiple trips between a Philadelphia residence and the Walmart in the weeks before the shooting, according to the affidavit.

Police say the records placed him in the area at a critical time and helped detectives investigate his movements before and after Cooper’s death.

Jean-Louis was arrested on October 23 by members of the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force at a residence in Philadelphia following an immigration investigation.

During a subsequent search of the home, detectives allegedly recovered a sandwich bag containing 11 rounds of .22-caliber ammunition.

The medical examiner determined that the bullets recovered during Cooper’s autopsy were also .22-caliber, according to police. The ammunition finding forms part of the evidence being examined in the case; its significance must ultimately be assessed through the criminal proceedings.

Jean-Louis faces a first-degree murder charge, along with additional charges related to the killing. He also faces third-degree murder and firearms-related charges, according to the reported court records.

What Happens Next in the Case?

First-degree murder is among the most serious criminal charges under Pennsylvania law and can carry a sentence of life imprisonment if a defendant is convicted. The applicable penalties depend on the charges, the evidence and the outcome of the court proceedings.

Jean-Louis has been charged, but the allegations against him have not been proven at trial. Prosecutors will need to establish the elements of the charged offenses through admissible evidence, while the defense will have the opportunity to challenge the prosecution’s account.

The case is expected to focus on the surveillance footage, witness testimony, cellphone records, forensic findings and the alleged history between Cooper and Jean-Louis.

For Cooper’s family, friends and co-workers, the investigation follows the sudden loss of a woman who had simply finished her shift and was preparing to leave work.

Her death has also renewed attention to the warning signs that can accompany a troubled relationship, including alleged physical violence, unwanted contact and attempts to monitor another person’s movements.

Authorities continue to pursue the criminal case as investigators work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the deadly encounter outside the Walmart.
