Brian Kuchinka has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the 2025 killing of his former girlfriend, K-Leigh Hill-Nelson, in Port Allegany, Pennsylvania.

Kuchinka, 29, was sentenced Monday, October 5, in McKean County Court after being convicted of first-degree murder in August. The judge also ordered a separate, consecutive sentence for abuse of a corpse.

The case began after Hill-Nelson failed to show up for her nursing home job in Smethport on February 21, 2025. Her family and coworkers tried to reach her, and she was reported missing.

Investigators later determined that Kuchinka had encountered Hill-Nelson while she was driving to work. Prosecutors said he followed her and cut off her vehicle in Smethport. When Hill-Nelson tried to get help from other drivers, Kuchinka approached them first and told them there was no problem.

Hill-Nelson was able to continue driving, but prosecutors said Kuchinka knew the route she normally took to work and intercepted her again. He entered her vehicle, and she was shot in the head about a block from her workplace.

Evidence presented during the case also showed that Kuchinka later took Hill-Nelson’s body to a motel in Port Allegany. State police eventually found her body underneath a bed in the room.

The investigation revealed that the relationship between the two had ended before the killing. Prosecutors said Hill-Nelson had recently changed passwords to her social media accounts and intended to seek a Protection From Abuse order. Her family had also succeeded in having Kuchinka removed from her residence after he refused to leave.

Prosecutors further described a pattern of unwanted contact involving Hill-Nelson’s online accounts. They said Kuchinka had accessed her accounts and communicated with other people while pretending to be her.

Kuchinka had previously acknowledged causing Hill-Nelson’s death but disputed that he had acted intentionally or with premeditation. After hearing the evidence, McKean County President Judge John Pavlock determined that the circumstances supported a first-degree murder conviction.

At Monday’s sentencing hearing, Hill-Nelson’s relatives and the district attorney spoke about the impact of her death on her family and her young son. Kuchinka did not make a statement before the sentence was imposed.

The life sentence was mandatory under Pennsylvania law for the first-degree murder conviction in this case. The judge separately imposed additional punishment for abuse of a corpse, treating that offense as distinct from the murder itself.

The sentencing brought the criminal case to its latest stage more than a year and a half after Hill-Nelson’s death. Her family continues to face the loss of a mother, daughter, sister and loved one whose absence, prosecutors said, extends beyond the tragedy itself to the future memories they will never have the chance to make.
