A shooting at Oakbrook Center in Oak Brook, Illinois, left one man dead and a woman wounded Wednesday afternoon after an altercation involving people in two vehicles, authorities said.
The shooting happened shortly after noon in a parking lot near the L.L.Bean store at the shopping center. Officers responding to the scene found a man who had been fatally shot and a woman suffering from gunshot wounds.
The woman was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Her condition had not been released, and authorities had not identified either victim as of Wednesday evening.
Investigators said five people were involved in the meeting between the two vehicles. An altercation broke out in the parking lot before gunfire was exchanged.
One of the vehicles remained at Oakbrook Center, while the other left the area. Police later located the fleeing vehicle in neighboring Oakbrook Terrace, where three people were taken into custody for questioning.
Investigators used license plate reader cameras to help locate the vehicle, according to police.
Authorities have not said what led the group to meet at the shopping center or what prompted the shooting. It also remained unclear whether anyone taken into custody had been identified as the shooter.
The shopping center remained open after the incident, although a large police presence was seen around the property while investigators worked at the scene. Police described the shooting as isolated and said there was no ongoing threat to the public.
The investigation remains active, and additional information about the victims, those questioned and the circumstances surrounding the shooting is expected as authorities continue their work.
The incident comes several years after another shooting at Oakbrook Center. In December 2021, gunfire during a confrontation inside the mall injured four bystanders and one of the people involved. That case resulted in felony charges and an 18-year prison sentence for one of the men involved.
