DALLAS-FORT WORTH, Texas — Dolly Parton’s death at 80 has prompted an outpouring of memories across North Texas, where the country music superstar made appearances and built connections with fans over the years.

Parton died Aug. 25, 2026, in Nashville, Tennessee. Her official website confirmed her death, while her representatives said she had faced a brief battle with cancer and died surrounded by loved ones.

For generations of country music fans, Parton represented much more than a collection of hit songs. Her career included music, television, movies, songwriting and philanthropy, helping her become one of the most recognizable entertainers in the world.

In North Texas, her connection with audiences was particularly memorable.

Smokey Rivers, an assistant program music director and midday personality at 99.5 The Wolf, remembered the way Parton’s music made listeners feel that they knew her personally.

“You just get the feeling that she could be your neighbor,” Rivers said, describing the connection Parton had with her audience.

Rivers also pointed to Parton’s ability to move comfortably between different musical audiences. Her career crossed traditional boundaries, bringing country music to listeners who may not have otherwise followed the genre.

That broad appeal was also evident when Parton appeared at AT&T Stadium during the Dallas Cowboys’ Thanksgiving Day game in 2023.

Parton performed during the halftime show and famously wore a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders-inspired outfit. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones later recalled being struck by how authentic she remained in person.

“We were all just memorized, if you will,” Jones said of the performance. He described Parton as being every bit as genuine in person as she was on stage.

    Her impact went beyond entertainment.

During that same 2023 Cowboys game, Parton donated $1 million to The Salvation Army. The organization remembered her generosity following her death, emphasizing that she consistently treated helping others as an important part of her life.

Parton’s charitable work extended well beyond North Texas. Her Imagination Library has provided free books to children, while her philanthropy has included support for disaster recovery, medical research and other causes. Reuters noted that her charitable work was an important part of the legacy she leaves behind.

    Her career was equally expansive.

Born Jan. 19, 1946, in Tennessee, Parton began her professional career as a songwriter before becoming an internationally known performer. She eventually earned 11 Grammy Awards and was inducted into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Songs including “Jolene,” “9 to 5” and “I Will Always Love You” became defining moments in her career. Her work also reached television and film, where she appeared in movies including “9 to 5” and “Steel Magnolias.”

Parton remained connected with fans even as health problems caused her to step back from some public appearances. Earlier in 2026, she had discussed health issues and canceled a Las Vegas appearance. Her team later confirmed that she had been privately battling cancer before her death.

Her death also comes about a year and a half after the passing of her husband, Carl Dean, who died in March 2025 after nearly 60 years of marriage.

For North Texas fans, however, memories of Parton are likely to remain tied to her music, her warmth and the moments she shared with the region.

One fan recalled Parton as both stylish and strong, while another remembered growing up with her music through a grandfather who considered her one of his favorite artists.

That may be part of what made Parton unusual in popular culture: her audience was never limited to one generation.

Rivers, who never personally met Parton but spent decades playing her music on the radio, said he hoped her example would encourage people to continue doing good for others.

Parton’s legacy now extends beyond the records she sold or the awards she received. For many listeners in North Texas and around the world, it is also about the feeling that her music was personal — familiar enough to belong in family memories, yet powerful enough to reach generations of people.

    Dolly Parton was 80.
