A Minnesota man who admitted to killing his girlfriend during a confrontation over alleged infidelity has been sentenced to 40 years in prison. The case shocked the St. Paul community because of the brutality of the killing and what happened afterward: the man put the couple’s young daughter to bed before leaving the home.

Joseph Davis, 35, received the sentence after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the death of 33-year-old Christine Morris. The killing occurred at their home in St. Paul in May 2025.

Investigators said Davis became enraged after accusing Morris of cheating on him. The confrontation turned violent, ending with Morris suffering multiple fatal stab wounds. Their 2-year-old daughter was inside the home when the killing occurred.

The case also brought renewed attention to the history of domestic violence allegations involving Davis and the warning signs that friends said they had noticed before Morris’ death.

Police discovered Morris during a welfare check

The case came to light during the early hours of May 2, 2025, when St. Paul police officers went to a home on Edmund Avenue to conduct a welfare check.

According to court documents, Davis had contacted a family member and said he had killed Morris, expressing remorse for what he had done.

When officers entered the home, they heard a dog barking and a child coughing. They found the couple’s 2-year-old daughter sitting on a couch in the living room.

Upstairs, officers discovered Morris’ body beneath a blanket in a bedroom.

Investigators documented multiple stab wounds to her head, neck, chest and back. The injuries had damaged several internal organs, including her lung, kidney and spleen.

The discovery marked the beginning of an investigation that would uncover a history of troubling behavior, a confrontation over suspected infidelity and Davis’ own account of the moments surrounding the killing.

An argument over alleged cheating turned deadly

Investigators learned that Davis had accused Morris of being unfaithful. A friend who had spent time with Morris the previous evening told police that Morris had discussed the accusations.

According to the account included in court documents, Morris returned home at approximately 11 p.m. and sent her friend a message confirming that she had arrived safely.

Detectives later reported that Davis claimed he had discovered evidence of Morris having sex with another man. He alleged that he had installed a recording device in the home and said the man involved was married.

During questioning, Davis described years of resentment, accusing Morris of cheating, lying and manipulating him.

He told investigators that an argument began when he confronted her about what he believed had happened. He said the confrontation became physical.

Davis acknowledged stabbing Morris but claimed the killing had not been planned.

According to the police account, he expressed regret while describing the attack. He also acknowledged that Morris had suffered before she died.

Investigators said Davis watched her take her final breaths before covering her body with a blanket.

His statements became part of the evidence used to reconstruct the events leading to Morris’ death.

    What happened after the killing

One of the most disturbing details emerged from Davis’ account of what he did after the stabbing.

According to the affidavit, he remained with the couple’s young daughter for roughly half an hour, lying down with her until she fell asleep.

    He then left the home.

Investigators said Davis drove to a nearby park and threw Morris’ cellphone out of the vehicle window. Police later recovered the phone as they worked to establish his whereabouts and piece together the timeline.

After leaving the home, Davis eventually went to an apartment in Minneapolis, where officers located him.

The woman living there told investigators that she had met Davis through a dating app about a month earlier. She said he contacted her that day, told her he was running from police and asked whether he could stay at her apartment.

According to the affidavit, he did not explain why authorities were looking for him.

A SWAT team eventually persuaded Davis to come outside, allowing police to take him into custody.

Friends had raised concerns about his behavior

Court records also revealed a troubling history of alleged domestic violence.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Davis had been arrested at least three times in domestic violence cases involving Morris as the alleged victim.

Investigators also learned that a former girlfriend had obtained a restraining order against him and feared he might hurt her.

Friends of Morris told police that she had previously expressed concern about her safety. Some reportedly said she had warned them that Davis would be responsible if something happened to her or her daughter.

Those accounts became an important part of the broader picture investigators developed during the case.

A history of domestic violence does not automatically predict a particular outcome, but repeated threats, controlling behavior and prior violence can be serious warning signs in an abusive relationship. Domestic violence advocates encourage people who feel unsafe to seek confidential support and develop a safety plan when possible.

Morris’ death has left difficult questions about whether the danger she reportedly feared could have been prevented.

A mother remembered by family and friends

Beyond the criminal proceedings, Morris’ death left a young child facing life without her mother.

A fundraising campaign organized after her death described her as a loving mother, sister and friend. It also emphasized the future her daughter would now have to navigate without her.

The loss of a parent at such a young age can create lasting emotional and practical challenges for a child, particularly when the surviving family must also cope with the circumstances surrounding the death.

The fundraising appeal focused on honoring Morris’ life and helping provide her with a dignified farewell.

For those who knew her, the case is not defined solely by the crime or the sentence. It is also a story about a mother whose life was cut short and a daughter who will grow up with memories of her mother shaped by the people who loved her.

    A 40-year prison sentence

Davis pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in September 2026, according to the reported court timeline, and was sentenced to 40 years in prison on October 26, 2026.

The sentence brings a significant stage of the criminal case to a close, holding Davis accountable for the murder to which he admitted guilt.

However, the punishment cannot undo the loss suffered by Morris’ family or restore the childhood her daughter should have had with her mother.

The case also serves as a reminder that domestic violence can involve a pattern of behavior long before a fatal incident occurs. Allegations of repeated abuse, threats and fear within a relationship deserve serious attention, particularly when a person believes their safety or their child’s safety may be at risk.

Morris’ death has left her family grieving and her daughter facing an uncertain future. As Davis begins his prison sentence, the lasting consequences of that night will continue for the people who loved her.
