A family in Southfield, Michigan, is facing a devastating loss after a 23-year-old man was found shot to death inside his home, and his younger brother was accused of carrying out the killing.

Breylon Roberts, 21, has been charged with first-degree premeditated murder in the death of his older brother, Trey Cameron Roberts. Investigators believe jealousy over Trey’s success and a history of tension between the siblings may have played a role in the fatal shooting.

The case took a heartbreaking turn when the brothers’ 17-year-old sister returned home on October 19, 2026, and discovered signs of violence inside the family residence. Her frantic reaction, including repeatedly asking her brother what he had done, became one of the most disturbing details to emerge from the investigation.

Authorities say surveillance footage, shell casings and a firearm recovered during the investigation helped them piece together what happened before officers arrived.

Teen Sister Finds Signs of a Shooting

Police were called to a home in the 17000 block of Dorset Avenue at around 3 p.m. on October 19 after the teenager reported finding blood and what appeared to be bullet holes inside the residence.

The discovery prompted an emergency call as the family faced a situation no one would expect to encounter at home.

According to investigators, Breylon returned to the residence shortly afterward. His sister was heard repeatedly shouting, “What did you do?! What did you do?!”

Responding officers entered the home and found Trey in the kitchen with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Breylon was taken into custody, and detectives began examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including evidence collected inside the house and information from people familiar with the brothers.

Security Camera Captured the Sound of Gunfire

Investigators reviewed footage from a nearby security camera that reportedly recorded 17 gunshots shortly after 12:46 p.m., several hours before the police response.

The footage allegedly showed Breylon leaving through the rear of the residence about a minute after the gunfire. Police Chief Elvin Barren said the suspect was seen walking away with the family dog, an action witnesses reportedly considered unusual.

Investigators later traced his movements to other locations, including a family member’s home, where he reportedly behaved strangely and took a shower before returning to the residence.

Police also recovered 17 spent 9mm shell casings from the kitchen where Trey was found.

During a search of a black Jeep Grand Cherokee registered to Breylon, officers allegedly discovered a privately made handgun beneath the driver’s seat. The weapon reportedly had an empty magazine.

Barren said ballistic testing linked the recovered firearm to evidence collected at the crime scene.

The combination of the surveillance footage, physical evidence and witness accounts became central to the investigation.

Police Point to Possible Resentment Over His Brother’s Success

Investigators believe the shooting may have stemmed from longstanding tension between the brothers.

During a news conference, Barren said conversations with relatives and friends suggested Breylon was jealous of Trey’s achievements and the positive relationships he maintained with people around him.

According to the police chief, Trey was doing well in his employment and was well-liked by family members and friends. Investigators believe those differences may have contributed to resentment that developed over time.

However, jealousy remains the motive investigators have identified based on interviews and other information gathered during the investigation. The allegations will be considered as the criminal case moves forward.

The circumstances have drawn attention to how unresolved conflict within families can become especially destructive when it escalates into violence.

Authorities have not suggested that professional success alone caused the tragedy. Rather, investigators are examining what they describe as an ongoing dispute between the siblings and how it may have contributed to the events of October 19.

Prosecutors Describe a Devastating Family Loss

Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said the death was particularly tragic because it happened inside the victim’s own home, where he should have been safe.

The case has also raised serious concerns about the impact on the brothers’ teenage sister, who discovered the aftermath of the shooting.

Barren said the family would need support as it copes with the loss. He emphasized the importance of counseling, community assistance and family intervention when serious conflicts arise.

While the criminal investigation focuses on establishing responsibility for Trey’s death, the emotional consequences extend well beyond the courtroom. Losing a family member to violence can leave relatives dealing with grief, shock and difficult questions about what happened.

For the teenage sister, being confronted with the scene and then seeing her brother return home made an already traumatic situation even more distressing.

    Breylon Roberts Pleads Not Guilty

Breylon Roberts has pleaded not guilty to first-degree premeditated murder and a felony firearm charge. He is being held without bond as the case proceeds through the court system.

His next court appearance is scheduled for November 5, 2026, for a probable cause conference.

Under Michigan law, a conviction for first-degree premeditated murder carries a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. The separate felony firearm charge also carries its own potential penalty.

Those consequences would apply only if the charges result in a conviction. Roberts is presumed innocent unless and until he is proven guilty in court.

The next stages of the case will give prosecutors and the defense an opportunity to address the evidence, including the recovered firearm, ballistic findings, witness statements and surveillance footage.

A Tragedy That Leaves a Family Searching for Answers

The death of Trey Roberts has left a family confronting a loss that unfolded inside the place where they lived together.

Investigators have described possible jealousy and years of conflict as important elements of the case, but the full circumstances will be examined through the legal process.

The incident also serves as a reminder that serious family disputes should not be ignored when they involve escalating threats, intimidation or violence. Access to counseling, conflict-resolution services and timely support may help families address dangerous situations before someone is hurt.

For the Roberts family, those broader lessons come amid an immediate and painful reality: Trey is dead, his younger brother faces a murder charge, and their teenage sister witnessed the aftermath of a tragedy that will affect the family for years to come.
