Iesha Thomas, 31, is accused in the death of Cameron Young following an early-morning confrontation on West Red Oak Drive, according to authorities and court records.
Memphis police were called to the 200 block of West Red Oak Drive shortly after 1 a.m. Tuesday after a report of a person suffering from a serious wound. Officers found Young on the ground with injuries to his neck and shoulder area.
Young was still able to speak with investigators and reportedly told officers that a man wearing a red shirt and black pants had stabbed him at a Shell gas station.
He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, where he later died. Authorities classified the death as a homicide.
As detectives continued investigating, evidence at the apartment complex pointed investigators in a different direction.
Police reportedly followed a trail of blood from the area where Young was found toward an apartment unit. Investigators also observed a significant amount of blood near the entrance and later found additional blood droplets inside the residence.
According to the investigation, detectives obtained a search warrant for the apartment. Mail bearing Thomas’ name was reportedly found inside one of the bedrooms.
Surveillance footage from the apartment complex also became a key part of the investigation.
The video allegedly showed Young arguing with a woman dressed in black before the two went inside an apartment. A short time later, Young came back outside, followed by the woman.
Investigators said Young could be heard saying that she had stabbed him.
Authorities also said the woman could be heard making threatening statements toward Young after he came outside. The woman was later identified as Thomas.
A relative who was with Thomas that night also reportedly told investigators that Thomas and Young had argued after arriving at the apartment complex around 12:30 a.m. The relative said the pair went inside before Young emerged bleeding from his neck, with Thomas following him outside.
Police subsequently identified Thomas as the woman seen in the surveillance footage and arrested her.
Thomas is being held at the Shelby County Jail without bond on the second-degree murder charge.
