MIRAMAR, Fla. — A dog was shot and killed Friday afternoon in Miramar after police say it attacked a man who was visiting a friend’s home.
The shooting happened around 3:45 p.m. near Southwest 87th Avenue and Pembroke Road, in a quiet cul-de-sac neighborhood. Officers were called to the scene after reports of a shooting involving a man and a dog.
Miramar Police Chief Delrish Moss told reporters that the man tried to kick the dog away as it attacked him. When the animal kept coming at him, he pulled out a gun and fired, killing the dog on the spot.
The dog was not a stray. Chief Moss said it belonged to a friend of the man who was attacked, and the man had been visiting the home at the time.
A woman who lives at the residence was also taken to a nearby hospital, but authorities said her hospital visit was unrelated to the shooting — she reportedly wasn’t feeling well for reasons that weren’t specified.
Investigators spent time at the scene examining a grassy patch between two homes as part of their review. After looking into what happened, police determined the man had acted to protect himself and won’t be facing any criminal charges. The dog’s owners have also said they do not plan to press charges.
Miramar police have not released any further details about the dog or the events leading up to the attack.
