A man was seriously injured Thursday morning when a sedan and an SUV collided head-on in Plymouth, Massachusetts, after police said the SUV had been driven by a 17-year-old girl who had left a wellbeing check in nearby Kingston.

The crash happened around 11:50 a.m. near the intersection of Plympton Road, also known as Route 80, and Carver Road, close to the West Plymouth Square shopping plaza. Plymouth police and fire crews responded after receiving reports that a driver was trapped inside one of the vehicles.

Firefighters found the adult male driver of the sedan heavily trapped inside his vehicle. Crews used hydraulic rescue equipment to free him from the wreckage before he was taken by ambulance to a landing zone at Plymouth Municipal Airport.

From there, he was flown by medical helicopter to a Boston-area trauma center for treatment of serious injuries. Authorities have not publicly released his identity or provided a more detailed update on his condition.

The other vehicle was an SUV driven by the teenage girl. She suffered minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment, according to authorities.

Police pursuit began after wellbeing check

The events leading up to the Plymouth collision began in Kingston, where the girl’s family had requested a wellbeing check, police said.

During that response, the teenager reportedly left in a family vehicle. Kingston police said officers believed she did not have a driver’s license and was driving erratically.

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the girl continued driving. Police later ended the pursuit because of concerns about public safety, according to Kingston authorities.

A short time later, the SUV was involved in the head-on collision in Plymouth.

After the crash, police said the teenager initially ran from the scene on foot. She was located a short time later and taken into custody by Plymouth police. She was also treated for minor injuries at a local hospital.

    Investigation remains underway

The crash is being investigated by Plymouth police. Kingston police said criminal charges are pending from both departments.

Because the driver is a juvenile, authorities have not released her name.

The crash caused Plympton Road to close while emergency crews worked at the scene and cleared the vehicles. The roadway has since reopened.

Authorities have not announced the specific charges that the teenager may face. The investigation into the crash and the events that preceded it remains ongoing.
